Causes

What to check

  • Visual inspection of injector 3 connector, wiring harness and ground points for damage, corrosion or loose pins
  • Monitor live data: cylinder contribution/trims, misfire counters, injector pulse/command, fuel rail pressure, boost pressure, MAF/MAP values
  • Check fuel filter condition and fuel pressure at the rail with a gauge
  • Perform a cylinder compression or leak-down test on cylinder 3 and compare to others

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all codes and freeze-frame data; note engine load, RPM, coolant temp and fuel rail pressure at fault occurrence.
  2. Visually inspect injector 3 wiring, connector and ground. Repair any corrosion, damage or loose connections.
  3. Check fuel system: inspect filter, measure fuel rail pressure under key-on and during cranking/running; repair supply issues.
  4. Use a scan tool to monitor cylinder contribution/trims and misfire counters. Clear codes and attempt to reproduce.
  5. Swap injector 3 with a known-good injector from another cylinder and re-run: if code follows injector, replace injector.
  6. If code remains on cylinder 3 after swap, perform compression and/or leak-down test on cylinder 3 and compare to other cylinders. Repair mechanical issues if found.
  7. Inspect intake manifold, vacuum lines and EGR for leaks or restrictions that could affect cylinder 3; correct as needed.
  8. If electrical faults suspected, back-probe connector to check command voltage/current to injector and continuity to PCM; repair harness or connector faults.
  9. Reprogram/update PCM software if manufacturer bulletin applies and no hardware fault found.
  10. After repair, clear codes, road-test and re-scan to confirm repair; repeat diagnostics if the code returns.
