Causes

  • Leaking or internally leaking fuel injector (cylinder 7)
  • Injector pintle stuck or damaged
  • Clogged or leaking fuel return on injector
  • Wiring short to ground or short to voltage at injector 7
  • Poor connector contact or corrosion at injector harness
  • Low or unstable fuel rail pressure or faulty fuel pressure regulator

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) / Check Engine light on
  • Rough idle or vibration correlated to cylinder 7
  • Misfire counts logged for cylinder 7 or overall misfire
  • Increased fuel consumption or smell of fuel (if injector leaking)
  • Black smoke from exhaust under load (rich condition)
  • Poor engine performance or hesitation

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and live data with a capable scan tool; note fuel trim, misfire counts, injector pulse width and commanded balance data for cylinder 7
  • Visual inspection of injector 7 harness and connector for damage, corrosion, or pin push-out
  • Measure injector 7 resistance (Ω) and compare to other injectors and factory spec
  • Perform injector balance/flow test using scan tool or lab equipment
  • Fuel pressure test: static and while cranking/running to confirm rail pressure and regulator operation
  • Fuel rail pressure decay test with engine off to check for leaking injector(s)

Signal parameters

  • Injector coil resistance (Ω) — compare to other injectors and spec
  • Commanded injector pulse width (ms) from PCM
  • Injector current (A) during pulse (if measured)
  • Short-term and long-term fuel trim (STFT/LTFT) per bank and per cylinder where available (%)
  • Fuel rail pressure (bar or psi) at idle and under load
  • Misfire counts per cylinder and misfire detection status

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Safety first: relieve fuel system pressure before disconnecting injectors or performing fuel system work.
  2. Use a scan tool to read DTCs, freeze frame, and live data. Confirm P02B5 and note related codes (misfires, fuel pressure).
  3. Visually inspect wiring and connector for injector 7. Repair any damaged wiring or poor connector pins.
  4. Measure injector 7 resistance and compare with other injectors and spec. Replace if out of range or open/shorted.
  5. Perform an injector balance/flow test (on-vehicle using scan tool or bench flow test) to identify leakage or poor flow. Look for significantly higher or lower flow vs others.
  6. Conduct a fuel rail pressure and pressure decay test with engine off to detect internal injector leakage into the rail or return.
  7. If available, swap injector 7 with a known good injector from another cylinder. If the fault follows the injector, replace the injector.
  8. If the fault does not follow the injector, check and repair harness/PCM driver for that circuit. Backprobe connector to confirm proper supply voltage and ground when commanded.
  9. Perform compression or leak-down test on cylinder 7 to rule out mechanical issues that could mimic balance problems.
  10. After repairs, clear codes and road-test. Re-scan to confirm the code does not return and that fuel trims/misfire counts normalize.

Likely causes

  • Internal leakage or stuck pintle on injector 7
  • Wiring/connectors to injector 7 are damaged or corroded
  • Fuel rail/return leak affecting flow through injector 7
  • Injector driver fault in PCM (less common)
  • Cylinder mechanical issue affecting balance measurement (less likely)

Fault status

⚠️ Status
