Cylinder 6 Fuel Injector A Offset Learning At Min Limit

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Faulty or sticking fuel injector on cylinder 6 (mechanical or electrical fault)
  • Wiring harness issue: open, short, high resistance, or poor connector pin contact to injector
  • Poor engine or ECU ground affecting injector drive or sensing circuits
  • Low or unstable fuel rail pressure or fuel delivery problem
  • Contamination/clogged injector or fuel supply passage
  • Incorrect or failed adaptation/learning procedure or ECU software fault

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • Rough idle or vibration, especially at idle
  • Misfire or reduced power under load (may be intermittent)
  • Increased fuel consumption or black exhaust smoke
  • Hesitation or stumble during acceleration
  • Possible difficulty starting

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and all stored DTCs; note readiness and freeze conditions
  • Record live data: injector learning/offset value for cylinder 6 and compare to other cylinders
  • Check injector pulse width and cylinder contribution/balance on a scan tool
  • Inspect injector connector and wiring for corrosion, damage, or pushed-out pins
  • Measure injector coil resistance and compare to manufacturer spec
  • Perform a voltage/ground check at the injector connector with key on/engine cranking

Signal parameters

  • Injector learning/offset value for cylinder 6 (adaptation count or ms)
  • Injector pulse width (ms) for cylinder 6
  • Injector drive current (A) for piezo injectors or current ramp behavior for high-pressure systems
  • Fuel rail pressure (kPa/bar/psi)
  • Battery/charging voltage (V)
  • Engine RPM

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all DTCs and freeze frame; note if code is current or historical. Clear codes and perform a road/drive cycle to confirm recurrence.
  2. With a scan tool, view live data: compare injector A offset for cylinder 6 to offsets for other cylinders. Confirm it's at or near the minimum limit.
  3. Visually inspect the wiring and connector at injector 6 for corrosion, damage, loose pins, and confirm secure connection.
  4. Measure injector coil resistance and compare to spec. For piezo injectors, inspect specified electrical parameters per manufacturer procedure.
  5. Backprobe injector connector: check supply voltage (key ON) and verify ground/driver signal while cranking and running. Look for intermittent drops or high resistance.
  6. Use a lab scope to check injector drive waveform (pulse width, rise/fall, current profile) and compare to a known-good cylinder or reference waveform.
  7. Check fuel system: static and dynamic fuel rail pressure, regulator function, and filter condition. Address any pressure abnormalities.
  8. Perform a cylinder contribution or balance test and/or temporarily disable injector 6 (per safe procedure) to assess change in engine behavior.
  9. If electrical checks are good but offset remains at min, remove injector 6 for bench inspection and flow testing or replacement. Also inspect for dirt/contamination.
  10. If mechanical issues are suspected, perform compression and/or leak-down testing on cylinder 6 and inspect intake/exhaust for leaks.
  11. After repair or replacement, clear codes, perform required injector adaptation/learning procedure per OEM, and recheck for DTC recurrence and proper offsets.
  12. If all hardware checks good and code persists, verify ECM software level and consider ECU reflash or replacement only after exhausting wiring/injector checks.

Likely causes

  • Defective injector (most common)
  • Damaged wiring or connector to injector A on cylinder 6
  • Low fuel rail pressure or intermittent fuel supply
  • Contamination/clogged injector nozzle
  • Poor ground or power supply to injector driver circuit

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Stored DTC indicates fuel injector A adaptation offset for cylinder 6 reached its minimum allowable value during learning. Control module flagged the condition because it cannot reduce injector contribution further for that cylinder.
