Causes

  • Injector flow for cylinder 7 is lower than expected (restricted/clogged or mechanically stuck closed).
  • Open or high-resistance wiring/connector to injector (poor connection, corrosion, damaged harness).
  • Low rail fuel pressure or intermittent fuel supply to injector(s).
  • PCM/ECM adaptive limits reached due to repeated corrections (may be caused by other engine issues).
  • Mechanical problems on cylinder 7 (low compression, valve issues, intake/exhaust leak) causing incorrect cylinder contribution.
  • Faulty injector driver or ECM output channel.

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light (MIL) illuminated; stored P02D8 code.
  • Rough idle or vibration, possibly intermittent.
  • Reduced engine power, hesitation, or poor drivability.
  • Increased fuel consumption or visible smoke from exhaust (if too rich/lean).
  • Misfire count logged for cylinder 7 under some conditions.

What to check

  • Read and record freeze frame and live data with a scan tool; check for other related codes (misfire, fuel trim, injector circuit).
  • Visually inspect injector connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, or loose pins.
  • Measure injector resistance and compare to manufacturer specification (look for open/high resistance).
  • Backprobe injector during cranking/idle to confirm pulse and voltage presence.
  • Check fuel rail pressure and regulator operation against spec.
  • Check short and long term fuel trim and cylinder contribution or balance test data.

Signal parameters

  • Injector pulse width / commanded injector on-time (ms)
  • Injector commanded duty cycle (%)
  • Short-term and long-term fuel trim (%)
  • Cylinder contribution / balance values (relative to other cylinders)
  • Injector resistance (Ω)
  • Injector current draw (mA) if available

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify the P02D8 code and freeze frame data. Note any accompanying codes (P0207, P0307, fuel trim or fuel pressure related codes).
  2. Clear codes, then drive to see if P02D8 returns and under what conditions (idle, load, cold start).
  3. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connector at injector 7 for damage, corrosion, or poor connection. Wiggle test while monitoring live data for intermittent changes.
  4. Measure injector resistance at the connector and compare to specification. High or infinite resistance suggests open or failed injector.
  5. Backprobe the injector with a scope or scan tool capturing waveform: verify correct pulse width, ground switching, and battery voltage level. Compare waveform to a known-good injector/cylinder.
  6. Check fuel rail pressure and stability at idle and during cranking; low rail pressure can produce lean conditions and force extreme adaptive offsets.
  7. Perform a cylinder balance/contribution test or swap injector 7 with another cylinder’s injector. If the problem follows the injector, replace or service the injector.
  8. If swapping does not move the fault, perform a compression or leak-down test on cylinder 7 to rule out mechanical causes.
  9. If wiring, injector, fuel pressure, and mechanical condition are good, consider testing injector driver output from the ECM and inspect ECM grounds and power. Replace ECM only after exhausting other causes and verifying driver failure.
  10. After repair or replacement, clear codes and perform required injector offset/learn procedure or allow ECM to relearn via drive cycle. Confirm the code stays cleared and drivability is restored.

Likely causes

  • Clogged or partially blocked injector on cylinder 7.
  • Damaged injector connector or broken wire (intermittent/open/high resistance).
  • Low or unstable fuel rail pressure or failing fuel pump/regulator.
  • Injector hydraulically stuck (sticking pintle) or internal injector failure.
  • Compression loss, burned valve, or head gasket leak affecting cylinder 7.
  • Faulty ECM driver for injector 7 or software/calibration issue.

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Adaptive offset for Cylinder 7 Fuel Injector A has reached the minimum limit. The ECM can no longer compensate for a lean/low-flow condition on cylinder 7. Inspect injector, wiring, fuel supply, and cylinder mechanical condition.
