Cylinder 5 ignition failure

AI status

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Faulty or fouled spark plug in cylinder 5
  • Failed ignition coil or coil pack for cylinder 5
  • Bad ignition lead or connector
  • Clogged, leaking, or electrically failed fuel injector on cylinder 5
  • Low compression or mechanical engine problem on cylinder 5 (valve, piston, rings, head gasket)
  • Vacuum leak or intake manifold leak affecting that cylinder

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • Engine running rough or rough idle
  • Loss of power, hesitation or stumbling under load
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Possible poor acceleration or stalling
  • Excessive vibration felt from engine bay

What to check

  • Read stored and pending codes and freeze-frame data from the ECU
  • Check misfire counters or cylinder contribution in live data (OBD-II scan tool)
  • Visually inspect spark plug, coil, and wiring for cylinder 5
  • Swap ignition coil with another cylinder to see if misfire follows coil
  • Swap fuel injector (or use another cylinder test) to see if misfire follows injector
  • Measure fuel rail pressure and confirm within specification

Signal parameters

  • Cylinder misfire counts and cylinder contribution map
  • Short/long term fuel trims (STFT/LTFT)
  • O2/AFR sensor readings and catalyst efficiency
  • Fuel rail pressure and fuel trim under load
  • Ignition coil primary/secondary voltage and waveforms
  • Injector pulse width and injector current

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all codes and freeze-frame. Note misfire counts and operating conditions when code set.
  2. Confirm the complaint: run engine and monitor live OBD data for cylinder contribution/misfire counters.
  3. Perform a visual inspection of spark plug, ignition coil/pack, plug boot and associated wiring on cylinder 5. Replace any visibly damaged components.
  4. Swap the coil from cylinder 5 with a known-good coil from another cylinder, clear codes and test drive. If misfire moves with coil, replace coil.
  5. If coil swap did not move misfire, swap the fuel injector or test injector pulse with a noid light/oscilloscope. Replace or service injector if faulty.
  6. Check fuel system: measure static and dynamic fuel pressure to verify adequate supply and regulator operation.
  7. Perform a compression test or leak-down test on cylinder 5. If compression is low, pursue mechanical diagnosis (valve sealing, head gasket, piston rings).
  8. Check for intake manifold or vacuum leaks near cylinder 5 using a smoke test or suitable leak detection method.
  9. Inspect and test wiring and connector continuity between ECM and ignition/injector circuits for cylinder 5; repair as needed.
  10. After repairs or component changes, clear codes and perform a controlled test drive to confirm the misfire is resolved and monitor for any new codes or catalyst-related codes.
  11. If fault persists and no hardware issue found, consider ECU/PCM diagnostics and software updates or specialist support.

Likely causes

  • Worn or fouled spark plug in cylinder 5
  • Failed ignition coil for cylinder 5
  • Faulty fuel injector or injector not pulsing on cylinder 5
  • Wiring/connector issue at coil or injector
  • Local low compression (valve, head gasket, piston rings)

Fault status

⚠️ Status
P0305 — Cylinder 5 Misfire Detected. The engine control module has detected combustion irregularity on cylinder 5. May trigger MIL and affect emissions; further diagnosis required to identify and repair the root cause.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.5-3.5 hours
