Causes

  • Damaged/crushed wiring or broken conductor in CKP harness

What to check

  • Read stored freeze-frame and freeze counts; note conditions when fault set (RPM, temp, speed)
  • Inspect CKP sensor connector for corrosion, bent pins, water intrusion and secure fit
  • Visually inspect wiring along harness for chafe, pinches, heat damage and repairs
  • Wiggle test wiring/connectors while monitoring live CKP data or oscilloscope for intermittent changes
  • Back-probe sensor connector to verify reference voltage, ground and signal with key on/crank
  • Use an oscilloscope to check waveform quality at the sensor and at the PCM pin while cranking and running

Signal parameters

  • Hall-effect sensor: digital square-wave signal, ~0 to +5V (vehicle-specific), frequency proportional to engine speed; clean, consistent transitions expected
  • Variable reluctance (VR) sensor: AC sine waveform amplitude rises with rpm; should produce measurable AC voltage when cranking
  • Reference voltage: typically a stable ~5V supply from PCM to sensor (if Hall type); verify with DMM/oscilloscope
  • Ground: low-resistance connection to chassis/PCM ground; poor ground causes signal dropouts
  • Intermittent symptoms often visible as dropped pulses, jittered waveform edges or complete signal loss on a scope

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all stored DTCs and freeze frame data. Note conditions (rpm, load, temp) when P0339 was set.
  2. Perform visual inspection of CKP sensor, connector, harness routing and reluctor/tone wheel. Repair any obvious damage.
  3. Clear the code, then attempt to reproduce by cranking/starting and driving while monitoring live CKP RPM and sync data.
  4. Back-probe connector: with key on/crank check reference voltage (if applicable), ground continuity and signal presence with DMM.
  5. Use an oscilloscope to view the CKP waveform at the sensor and at the PCM input while cranking and running. Look for missing pulses, noise, collapsing amplitude or intermittent dropouts.
  6. Perform a wiggle test: flex wiring and connectors while watching live data/scope to localize intermittent break or short.
  7. Check continuity and insulation between sensor wires and PCM; check for short to ground or battery. Repair any damaged wiring.
  8. Inspect tone wheel/reluctor for damage, missing teeth, or loose fit; correct or replace as necessary.
  9. If wiring and reluctor are good but signal is still intermittent, substitute a known-good CKP sensor or test with bench/vehicle swap if available.
  10. If new sensor and wiring are good but fault persists at PCM pin, verify PCM grounds and power. Consider PCM input fault if all upstream checks pass.
  11. After repairs, clear codes and re-test under the conditions that originally set the fault to confirm repair.

  • Wiring or connector corrosion at the sensor (most common on intermittent faults)
  • Sensor internal intermittent failure (thermal or vibration related)
  • Reluctor damage or foreign debris causing intermittent missing teeth
  • Intermittent open or short in signal/return wires due to chafing
  • Poor sensor supply/ground at PCM (loose connector or damaged pin)
