Causes

Signal parameters

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify the customer concern and note conditions when fault occurs (cold/hot, cranking/running)
  2. Connect OBD-II scanner, read/record freeze frame and related codes; clear codes and attempt to re-create
  3. Visually inspect sensor, wiring, and connector for damage, oil contamination, corrosion, or disconnection
  4. With ignition ON (engine OFF) backprobe connector: verify sensor reference voltage (typically 5 V for hall sensors) and good ground; repair missing reference/ground before proceeding
  5. Measure signal wire voltage while cranking and while engine running: for hall sensor look for 0–5 V square pulses; for VR sensor look for AC voltage. If no or low signal, continue diagnostics
  6. Perform continuity/resistance checks: signal circuit to ECM, and resistance of sensor per manufacturer spec; repair any opens/shorts
  7. If wiring and power/ground are confirmed good but signal is absent or intermittent, swap the camshaft position sensor with a known-good unit (if possible) or install a replacement and retest
  8. If swapping sensor does not resolve and wiring checks good, inspect reluctor/target and cam timing for mechanical damage or timing chain/belt jump
  9. Check ECM connector and grounds; if all circuits test good and problem persists, consider ECM fault and consult manufacturer service information before replacement
  10. After repair, clear codes and road-test to verify repair; monitor live data and capture waveform to confirm stable cam signal
