Malfunction of the primary/secondary circuit of the ignition coil C

AI status

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Failed ignition coil (coil C)
  • Open or short in coil primary or secondary windings
  • Damaged or corroded coil connector or wiring harness
  • Poor ground or power supply to the coil circuit
  • Faulty spark plug or ignition lead (if applicable)
  • PCM/ECU ignition driver fault

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) / Check Engine Light illuminated
  • Rough idle or engine misfire on the affected cylinder
  • Reduced power and poor acceleration
  • Increased fuel consumption and emissions
  • Possible stumbling, hesitation or backfire
  • Engine may be difficult to start or may not start

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and stored data; record misfire counts and related codes
  • Visually inspect coil pack, connectors and wiring for damage, corrosion, oil or moisture
  • Swap coil C with another known-good coil and see if the code or misfire moves with the coil
  • Measure battery voltage with engine cranking/running to ensure adequate supply
  • Check spark plug condition and gap for the affected cylinder
  • Measure coil primary and secondary resistances with manufacturer specs

Signal parameters

  • Typical primary coil resistance: approx. 0.4–2.0 ohms (varies by coil design) — consult OEM spec
  • Typical secondary coil resistance: approx. 4 kΩ–15 kΩ (varies by coil type) — consult OEM spec
  • Primary waveform: pulsed switching from PCM (dwell time variable, look for clean on/off transitions)
  • Secondary waveform: high-voltage pulse to spark plug; look for expected amplitude and duration on scope
  • Supply voltage: battery voltage at coil power feed under cranking/running (should be near battery voltage)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify the code: record freeze-frame and relevant live data. Clear codes and re-run to confirm repeatability.
  2. Visual inspection: with ignition off, inspect coil C connector, pins and wiring for corrosion, looseness or damage. Repair obvious faults.
  3. Functional swap: swap coil C with another coil on the engine. If the code or misfire follows the coil, replace the coil.
  4. Resistance checks: measure primary and secondary resistances of coil C and compare to OEM specs. Replace if out of range.
  5. Voltage and continuity: check for power and ground at the coil connector with key on and while cranking; check harness continuity to PCM pins and for shorts to ground/voltage.
  6. Oscilloscope test: probe the coil primary driver at the connector while cranking/running. Confirm PCM is commanding the coil (dwell/pulse). If PCM output is missing or abnormal and wiring is OK, suspect PCM driver.
  7. Inspect spark plug and compression: remove plug from the affected cylinder, check condition and replace if fouled; perform a compression/leakdown check if misfire persists.
  8. Repair: repair or replace damaged wiring/connector using correct terminals and insulation. Replace the coil if confirmed faulty.
  9. If wiring and coil test OK and PCM output abnormal: verify PCM power/ground and communication. Consider PCM replacement only after thorough verification.
  10. After repair: clear codes, perform road test and re-scan to confirm fault does not return.

Likely causes

  • Defective ignition coil C
  • Connector corrosion, bent pins or loose terminal at coil C
  • Broken/shorted wiring between coil C and PCM
  • Bad spark plug in the corresponding cylinder
  • PCM driver transistor fault (less common)

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Ignition coil C primary/secondary circuit malfunction detected — possible open/short, poor connection, failed coil, or PCM driver fault. Inspect coil C, wiring, connectors and related components.
