Causes

  • Failed ignition coil (coil D)
  • Open, short or high resistance in coil primary or secondary wiring
  • Corroded, loose or damaged coil connector
  • Faulty spark plug or plug boot at the cylinder served by coil D
  • Faulty ignition driver module or ECM ignition driver output
  • Intermittent wiring damage (chafing, pinched harness) or poor ground

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • Rough idle or intermittent misfire (may be specific cylinder)
  • Loss of power, hesitation or poor acceleration
  • Hard starting or no-start condition in severe failures
  • Increased fuel consumption and possible visible misfire under load

What to check

  • Read and record freeze-frame and stored codes; note any misfire codes (P030x) and related codes
  • Visual inspection of coil D, connector, wiring harness, and spark plug/boot
  • Wiggle-test connector/wiring while engine runs to check for intermittent faults (with caution)
  • Compare coil D to a known-good coil by swapping coils between cylinders to see if code follows coil
  • Measure coil primary and secondary resistance and compare to factory specification
  • Check supply voltage and ground at the coil connector with key ON and during cranking

Signal parameters

  • Primary circuit supply: battery voltage present at coil connector terminal with key ON (approx. battery voltage)
  • Primary circuit switching: driver pulls primary to ground when triggering (observe pulsed waveform with scope)
  • Primary resistance: measure ohms between primary terminals (refer to vehicle specs; compare with known-good coil)
  • Secondary resistance: measure ohms between high-voltage output and primary terminal (refer to specs)
  • Crank/cam reference signals: correct timing/pulse pattern when cranking (verify if mis-synchronization suspected)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all stored codes and freeze-frame data. Note any cylinder-specific misfire codes (P030x) and related faults.
  2. Perform visual inspection of coil D, connector, wiring harness, and spark plug/boot. Repair any obvious damage or corrosion.
  3. Swap coil D with another cylinder's coil. Clear codes and run engine. If fault moves to the other cylinder, replace the coil.
  4. With ignition OFF, measure coil primary and secondary resistance and compare to factory specifications. Replace coil if out of range.
  5. With key ON (engine OFF) verify battery voltage at coil supply terminal and a good ground. During crank, check for switching signal on primary terminal using a multimeter or preferably an oscilloscope.
  6. If no supply or ground, trace and repair wiring, fuses, and connectors. Repair poor grounds or corroded terminals.
  7. If wiring and coil test OK but no proper driver switching, inspect ECM connector for corrosion/damage. Validate driver output with a scope. If ECM driver is suspected, follow manufacturer procedures before replacing ECM.
  8. After repairs, clear codes and road-test to confirm the fault does not return. Re-scan to verify no related faults.

Likely causes

  • Damaged or failed coil pack/module on coil D
  • Corroded/loose connector or damaged wiring to coil D
  • Open/short in primary circuit (low-voltage side) between ECM and coil D
  • High resistance or short in secondary circuit (high-voltage side) or bad spark plug
  • ECM/ignition driver fault (less common) — verify after wiring & coil checks

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Ignition coil D primary/secondary circuit malfunction detected. MIL illuminated. Possible misfire or starting/performance issues; inspect coil, wiring and driver circuitry.
