Causes

  • Open, shorted or high-resistance wiring in EGR B circuit (power, ground, signal)
  • Corroded/loose connector at EGR B actuator or ECM
  • Faulty EGR B actuator (solenoid, stepper, motor) or EGR B position sensor
  • Clogged or restricted EGR passages or ports preventing expected movement/flow
  • Vacuum supply leak or blocked vacuum line (on vacuum-operated EGR)
  • Failed or out-of-calibration ECM/software anomaly

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL/CEL) illuminated
  • Reduced engine performance or hesitation under load
  • Rough idle, surging or stalling
  • Poor fuel economy and elevated NOx emissions
  • Failed emissions test
  • Possible limp-home mode depending on vehicle strategy

What to check

  • Read DTCs and freeze-frame/fuel trim/live data with a capable scan tool; note related codes
  • Visually inspect EGR B connector, wiring harness and ECM connector for damage, corrosion or pin push-out
  • Verify battery voltage during cranking/running; check main grounds and fuses/relays related to EGR circuit
  • Command EGR B ON/OFF or vary commanded position with scan tool while monitoring actual feedback (position sensor / differential pressure if available)
  • Measure voltage/ground at EGR B connector with key on and engine running; check signal voltage or PWM duty to actuator
  • Measure resistance of actuator coil/stepper per service spec and check continuity to ECM

Signal parameters

  • EGR position sensor (if present): typically ~0.5–4.5 V sweep from closed to open (consult OEM spec)
  • Actuator supply: battery voltage (~12 V) at power pin with key on/running (verify within ~1 V of battery)
  • Actuator coil resistance: generally low ohms to tens of ohms depending on design — check service manual
  • Control signal: PWM duty 0–100% or discrete ON/OFF depending on actuator type; frequency varies by manufacturer (consult spec)
  • Expected commanded vs actual feedback: commanded % open should correlate with sensor voltage/position feedback within manufacturer tolerance

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect scan tool, record freeze frame and all related codes. Note engine conditions when code set.
  2. Perform a full visual inspection of the EGR B wiring, connectors and harness. Repair any damaged wiring or corroded pins.
  3. Verify power and ground at the EGR B connector (key on). If power/ground missing, trace to fuse/relay/ground point and repair.
  4. Monitor live data: command EGR B through the scanner and observe feedback (position sensor or flow). If commanded change produces no/incorrect feedback, continue.
  5. Measure actuator coil resistance and compare to spec. Check continuity between actuator and ECM pins. Repair short/open faults.
  6. If vacuum-operated, apply vacuum to the actuator and verify valve movement and correct feedback signal. Replace vacuum lines/solenoid if faulty.
  7. Clean EGR valve and passages; verify valve moves freely and ports are not blocked. Re-test with commanded inputs.
  8. If wiring and mechanical function are good but feedback/signal still out of range, consider replacing the EGR B actuator/position sensor assembly.
  9. If replacement does not clear the issue, suspect ECM/internal circuit fault — verify with manufacturer diagnostics before replacing ECM.
  10. After repairs, erase codes and perform a road test and readiness checks to confirm system returns to normal and code does not recur.

Likely causes

  • Damaged or corroded connector/wiring to EGR B
  • Sticking or clogged EGR valve B preventing commanded movement
  • Failed EGR B actuator or its position sensor
  • Vacuum supply problem (vacuum-operated systems) or blocked passages

Fault status

⚠️ Status
