Causes

  • Faulty EGR valve (sticking, worn, or failed position sensor)
  • Faulty EGR control solenoid/actuator
  • Wiring damage (open, short to power/ground) or poor connector connection at EGR circuit
  • Poor ground or voltage supply to the EGR control
  • Carbon buildup blocking EGR passages (mechanical restriction)
  • PCM/software fault or incorrect calibration

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light / MIL illuminated with P045B stored
  • Reduced engine performance, hesitation or rough idle
  • Reduced fuel economy
  • Possible increased NOx emissions or failed emissions test
  • Engine surging or stumble during part-throttle cruise
  • Possible hard starting if EGR stuck open

What to check

  • Read all stored codes and freeze-frame data; note related EGR/EVAP codes
  • Capture live data: commanded EGR position/flow vs actual/feedback values
  • Visually inspect EGR valve, solenoid and wiring harness for damage or corrosion
  • Backprobe connector: verify reference voltage, signal voltage, and ground
  • Measure resistance of EGR solenoid/actuator and compare to spec
  • Check for vacuum leaks and condition of vacuum lines (if vacuum‑actuated)

Signal parameters

  • EGR position sensor voltage (typical 0.5–4.5 V depending on position; should change smoothly with commanded movement)
  • EGR command signal (duty cycle or voltage) from PCM: varies with load/engine speed
  • EGR solenoid coil resistance (typical small-ohm range; check service data)
  • Supply/reference voltage to EGR circuit (usually battery/ignition switched 12 V or regulated reference)
  • Ground continuity: near 0 Ω to chassis ground

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify P045B is current and note freeze-frame. Scan for additional EGR/engine codes.
  2. With key ON engine OFF, inspect connectors and wiring at EGR valve/solenoid for corrosion, looseness, or damage; repair as needed.
  3. Use live data to compare PCM commanded EGR position/flow vs actual feedback. If feedback does not change when commanded, proceed.
  4. Backprobe the EGR connector: verify proper reference/supply voltage and good ground. Check signal waveform/voltage while commanding EGR on a diagnostic tool.
  5. Measure resistance of the EGR solenoid/actuator and compare to manufacturer specification. Replace if out of range or open.
  6. If vacuum‑actuated, verify vacuum supply and test actuator movement with vacuum pump while commanding; check for leaks.
  7. Remove and inspect the EGR valve and passages for carbon restriction. Clean or replace valve if mechanically stuck or heavily soiled.
  8. If valve moves and electricals are good but feedback still incorrect, test or replace EGR position sensor (if applicable).
  9. Repair any wiring harness faults (shorts, opens, poor grounds) and recheck function.
  10. If electrical and mechanical systems check good, consider PCM reflash or replacement after confirming with manufacturer technical info.
  11. Clear codes and perform road test to verify the fault does not return.

Likely causes

  • Stuck or carbon-bound EGR valve preventing commanded movement
  • Corroded/loose connector or damaged harness at EGR valve/solenoid
  • Failed EGR position sensor (if equipped) or incorrect sensor output
  • Failed EGR control solenoid/actuator
  • Intermittent ground or low battery/charging voltage affecting control

Fault status

⚠️ Status
P045B — EGR B Control Circuit Range/Performance: EGR control not achieving expected range or feedback differs from commanded value; inspect EGR valve/actuator, wiring, and control circuit.
