Causes

  • Open or short in the sensor signal, power or ground wiring

What to check

  • Read and record freeze-frame data and live exhaust pressure sensor B values with scan tool
  • Check for additional related DTCs (other exhaust pressure sensors, boost sensor, DPF codes)
  • Visual inspection of sensor, harness, connector and pressure hose for damage, corrosion, or soot
  • Back-probe sensor connector with key-on engine-off to verify reference voltage and ground
  • Perform wiggle test on harness while observing live data for intermittent faults
  • Inspect exhaust system for leaks or restrictions upstream/downstream of pressure pickup

Signal parameters

  • Reference/supply voltage: typically 5 V (vehicle-specific)
  • Signal output: typically 0.5–4.5 V proportional to pressure — values vary by manufacturer
  • At low exhaust backpressure (idle) expect a low voltage; under load the voltage should increase smoothly
  • Open-circuit or short-to-ground/voltage indicated by signal near 0 V or near supply voltage
  • Pressure range and exact voltages are vehicle-specific; consult manufacturer data for exact specs

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve freeze-frame and live data. Note sensor B voltage and compare behavior to other exhaust pressure sensors (A/C) if present.
  2. Perform a visual inspection: check sensor body, connector, pins and the pressure hose for soot, cracks, kinks, or disconnection.
  3. With key ON (engine OFF) back-probe the sensor: verify reference voltage (usually 5V), signal voltage, and good ground. Record values.
  4. If reference voltage or ground is missing, trace and repair wiring between sensor and PCM/ground point. Repair connector corrosion or broken pins.
  5. If voltages present but signal implausible, apply a known pressure (small hand pump or calibrated source) to the sensor input while monitoring live data to confirm sensor response.
  6. Perform continuity and resistance checks on harness to rule out intermittent opens/shorts. Wiggle harness while observing live data for changes.
  7. Inspect and, if necessary, clean or replace the pressure hose. Replace sensor if it does not respond correctly to applied pressure or fails manufacturer specs.
  8. After repair, clear codes and perform a road/regen cycle while monitoring live data to confirm correct operation and that code does not return.
  9. If wiring and sensor test good and code persists, check PCM grounds and supply circuits, and consider PCM diagnostics/repair per manufacturer procedures.

  • Damaged harness insulation or chafed wire creating intermittent short/ground
  • Connector pin corrosion or bent terminal causing bad contact
  • Plastic vacuum/pressure hose collapsed or clogged with soot
  • Sensor diaphragm failed from heat/soot/contamination
  • Aftermarket or recent repair disturbed wiring or hose routing
