Cruise Control Multi-Function Input A/B Correlation

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Damaged or shorted wiring between the cruise multi-function switch and the PCM
  • Corroded, loose, or contaminated connectors at the switch or PCM
  • Faulty cruise control multi-function (steering wheel) switch or clock spring
  • Intermittent contact from broken wires in the steering column (pinched/shorted)
  • PCM input circuit fault or internal module error
  • Aftermarket radio/steering wheel control wiring damage or retrofit interference

Symptoms

  • Cruise control inoperative or intermittent operation
  • Cruise cancel/resume/set functions behave erratically
  • Related steering wheel controls may not work
  • Check Engine Light or Cruise Malfunction indicator illuminated
  • Stored DTC(s) for cruise control switch/correlation

What to check

  • Retrieve freeze frame and related DTCs with a scan tool; note conditions
  • Visually inspect wiring and connectors at the steering column and PCM
  • Check connector pins for corrosion, bent pins, or pushed-out terminals
  • Perform wiggle test on steering column wiring while monitoring live data
  • Measure reference voltage, signal voltage and continuity for both input circuits
  • Inspect clock spring/airbag connectors for damage if present

Signal parameters

  • Reference voltage (often 5 V) present at switch supply pin with ignition ON
  • Switch signal voltages: expected steady or discrete changes (0–5 V) when pressing buttons
  • Open-circuit: infinite resistance between switch pin and PCM input
  • Short to ground: near 0 V on signal line when circuit should be high
  • Short between A and B: both circuits show identical voltages when they should differ

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record all related DTCs and freeze frame data. Clear codes and attempt to re-create the fault to verify reproducibility.
  2. Inspect the steering wheel multi-function switch and harness visually for damage, corrosion, or aftermarket splices. Check connectors at the switch and at the PCM.
  3. With ignition ON, backprobeboth input circuits at the switch and at the PCM. Verify reference voltage, ground, and that signal voltages change correctly when pressing each switch function.
  4. Perform continuity checks between switch pins and PCM input pins with connectors disconnected. Look for shorts between the two input circuits and to ground or battery.
  5. Wiggle the steering column wiring, connectors, and clock spring while observing live data or signal voltages to find intermittent faults.
  6. If wiring and connectors are good but signals are incorrect, bench-test or substitute the multi-function switch (or inspect and test the clock spring assembly) per manufacturer procedure.
  7. If substituted switch/clock spring are good and wiring checks fine, suspect PCM input circuit fault; confirm with advanced diagnostics and consult manufacturer technical service information before replacing PCM.
  8. After repairs, clear codes and road test to confirm the fault does not recur and that cruise functions operate normally.

Likely causes

  • Connector contamination or loose terminal at the steering column switch
  • Broken or chafed wires inside the steering column (clock spring area)
  • Failed multi-function switch assembly
  • Short between the two input circuits or to reference/ground

Fault status

⚠️ Status
PCM detected inconsistent or implausible correlation between cruise control multi-function switch inputs A and B. Indicates wiring, connector, switch assembly, clock spring, or PCM input issue requiring inspection and signal verification.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-2.5 hours
