Causes
- Failed or sticking active grille shutter actuator (motor or gear)
- Damaged wiring or poor connector contact in actuator control circuit
- Short to voltage or ground in control/PWM wiring
- Faulty module output (PCM/BCM) that drives the actuator
- Blown fuse or poor power/ground to the actuator
- Mechanical obstruction or corrosion preventing shutter movement
Symptoms
- Check Engine MIL or warning lamp illuminated
- Active grille shutters stuck open or closed, may affect cooling or aerodynamics
- Reduced fuel-economy benefit from grille shutters
- Possible elevated or fluctuating engine temperature (if shutters stuck closed during heavy load)
- Audible motor noise or no movement from shutter area when commanded
- Stored DTC(s) related to grille shutter or cooling fan circuits
What to check
- Read freeze frame and related DTCs with a capable scan tool; attempt to actuate shutter via bi-directional control
- Visually inspect shutter for physical damage, obstruction, ice, or corrosion
- Inspect connectors and wiring harness for damage, corrosion, and secure retention
- Check fuses and relays related to the grille shutter circuit
- Measure supply voltage and ground at the actuator connector with key on and while commanding
- Check actuator resistance and compare to manufacturer spec (motor/position sensor)
Signal parameters
- Supply voltage: nominal battery/ignition 9–14 V at actuator power terminal
- Control signal: PWM or switched output from module with 0–100% duty cycle (frequency varies by manufacturer)
- Position sensor (if equipped): analog feedback typically ~0.5–4.5 V proportional to shutter position
- Motor/coil resistance: low-ohm DC motor circuit (typical motor windings often
- Expected response: shutter moves to commanded position within a few seconds; feedback agrees with commanded duty/position
Diagnostic algorithm
- Retrieve and record all stored/related DTCs and freeze frame data. Clear codes and attempt to re-create condition while observing live data.
- Perform a visual inspection: check shutter for binding, foreign objects, ice, corrosion, and ensure mechanism moves freely by hand (with ignition off and safe to do so).
- Inspect connectors and wiring for corrosion, bent pins, damaged insulation, or water entry. Repair any damage found.
- With the ignition on, verify actuator power and ground at the connector. Command the shutter open/close and observe voltage/ground changes; use scope if available to view PWM waveform.
- If power and ground are present but actuator does not respond, disconnect actuator and measure its coil resistance and position sensor outputs against spec. Replace actuator if out of spec or mechanically seized.
- If actuator is good, back-probe or inspect the module driver output. Check for short to voltage/ground or an open circuit in the control wiring. Repair harness as needed.
- If wiring checks good and actuator works on a bench supply but does not respond when connected to vehicle, suspect module (PCM/BCM) driver failure. Confirm with module-specific tests before replacing the module.
- After repairs, clear codes and perform function test and road test to confirm proper shutter operation and that DTC does not return.
Likely causes
- Actuator motor failure or seized mechanism
- Open, shorted, or high-resistance wiring between module and actuator
- Connector corrosion or terminal damage at actuator or module
- Module output transistor or driver failure
- Power supply (fuse/relay) or ground fault
Fault status
