Active Grille Air Shutter A Supply Voltage Circuit/Open

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Open or broken power supply wire to the grille shutter actuator
  • Poor or corroded connector at the actuator or fuse/relay box
  • Blown fuse or faulty relay supplying the shutter circuit
  • Failed grille shutter actuator/motor
  • Poor ground connection for the actuator circuit
  • ECM/PCM internal driver failure or software anomaly

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) or service light illuminated
  • Active grille shutter does not move when commanded (stuck open or closed)
  • Reduced aerodynamics / slightly worse fuel economy at speed
  • Engine warm-up or cooling behavior may be altered (longer warm-up or higher idle temperature)
  • Possible diagnostic trouble codes related to charging or body electrical circuits

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and stored data with a scan tool; attempt active tests to command the shutter
  • Visual inspection of wiring and connectors at the grille shutter actuator and fuse/relay box
  • Check relevant fuses and relays for continuity and correct operation
  • Back-probe connector: measure supply voltage and ground at actuator connector with ignition on and while commanding shutter
  • Check continuity and resistance of supply and ground circuits between actuator and fuse/ECM
  • Wiggle test wiring while commanding to reproduce fault

Signal parameters

  • Supply voltage at actuator connector: near battery voltage (~11–14.5 V) with ignition on/when commanded
  • Control signal type: either switched +12V or ground-side driver / PWM depending on manufacturer (check service manual)
  • Expected actuator resistance: low ohms (motor winding); typically a few ohms to tens of ohms — large or infinite indicates open circuit
  • Typical actuator current draw: small DC motor range (tenths to a few amps); no current indicates open circuit
  • Continuity from actuator supply pin to fuse/relay and to battery positive should be present

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify DTC and capture freeze frame. Clear codes and see if code returns after driving or commanded tests.
  2. Perform a visual inspection of the grille shutter assembly, connector, and harness for damage, corrosion, or water intrusion.
  3. Check fuses and relays related to the engine/accessory circuits; replace any blown fuses and retest.
  4. With connector accessible, back-probe the power terminal. With ignition on and shutter not commanded, check presence/absence of supply per OEM spec.
  5. Command the grille shutter with a scan tool while measuring supply voltage and ground at the actuator. Note any change; no supply indicates open/high-resistance feed.
  6. Measure resistance between the actuator power pin and the fuse/relay output, and between the actuator ground pin and chassis ground. Repair any open/high resistance found.
  7. If supply and ground are good but actuator does not operate, bench-test or replace the actuator. Verify motor windings for continuity; infinite resistance indicates an open motor.
  8. If wiring, connectors, fuses, relays and actuator test OK, investigate ECM/PCM driver output for faults and consult vehicle-specific service manual for further ECM tests or reprogramming.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and perform functional tests and a short drive cycle to confirm the fault is resolved and the code remains cleared.

Likely causes

  • Corroded/loose connector at the shutter actuator
  • Damaged wiring harness (chafing, broken conductor) between fuse/relay and actuator
  • Blown fuse or failed relay for accessory/engine module circuits
  • Failed actuator motor or internal wiring open
  • Ground terminal loose or high resistance
