Economy Mode Switch Circuit High

Causes

  • Short to battery/ignition feed on the ECON switch wiring
  • Faulty or stuck ECON/Economy Mode switch (internal shorted contact)
  • Corroded, damaged or loose connector at the switch or control module
  • Aftermarket accessory or recent repair that disturbed wiring
  • Faulty body/control module input circuitry
  • Water intrusion causing a short or conductive path

Symptoms

  • Economy/ECON mode indicator may not engage or respond
  • Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) or warning message illuminated
  • Stored P05CA with possible related codes
  • Inconsistent or intermittent economy mode operation
  • Possible reduced features controlled by the same module

What to check

  • Read and record all stored codes and freeze frame data with a scanner
  • Visually inspect ECON switch, harness, connectors and nearby wiring for damage or corrosion
  • Backprobe the ECON switch connector and measure signal voltage with key on while toggling the switch
  • Check for continuity to ground and for unintended continuity to battery/ignition feed
  • Wiggle test harness while monitoring voltage and watch for intermittent behavior
  • Disconnect the switch and measure voltage at the harness to see if the circuit remains high (isolates switch vs. wiring/module)

Signal parameters

  • Expected behavior: signal near low reference (close to 0 V) when switch is OFF; near battery voltage (~12 V) when switch is ON, depending on vehicle design
  • Circuit-high condition: measured voltage higher than the module's allowed high threshold when the switch should be low
  • Typical inactive voltage: < 1.0 V (varies by manufacturer)
  • Typical active voltage: within battery voltage range (approx. 9–14 V)
  • Note: exact thresholds vary by vehicle — consult manufacturer repair data for precise values

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify the code with a scan tool, record freeze frame and freeze data, then clear codes and attempt to re-create the fault.
  2. Inspect the ECON switch, connector and harness for obvious damage, corrosion, water ingress or aftermarket modifications.
  3. With ignition ON (engine off), backprobe the switch signal terminal. Operate the switch and observe voltage. Compare to expected behavior (low when off, battery when on).
  4. If signal is high when the switch is OFF, disconnect the switch. If the harness still shows high voltage with the switch disconnected, suspect a short to power or module driver/pull-up — proceed to wiring isolation.
  5. Check for a short to battery using an ohmmeter/voltmeter: with battery disconnected, measure continuity between the signal wire and fused battery/ignition feed. Repair any shorted wiring.
  6. Inspect and test ground and any reference resistors or pull-down components in the circuit. Repair corroded grounds or poor contacts.
  7. If wiring and switch check good, test or substitute the ECON switch (if available) to confirm switch integrity.
  8. If the circuit still reads high after isolating switch and harness, suspect control module input failure. Confirm with manufacturer diagnostics before replacing the module.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and perform a road/test cycle and re-scan to confirm the fault does not return.

Likely causes

  • Shorted wire between switch signal and fused 12V supply
  • Switch internal failure producing a constant high voltage
  • Poor connector pin fit or corrosion raising circuit voltage reading
  • Chafed wiring contacting a power source under dash or near harness
  • PCM/BCM input electronics failed (less common)
