Exhaust Aftertreatment Power Relay Control Circuit Low

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Broken or shorted wiring in the relay control circuit (short to ground)
  • Poor or corroded ground or power connections at the relay or ECM
  • Faulty exhaust aftertreatment power relay (stuck open or coil short)
  • Blown fuse or fusible link supplying the relay coil or relay power
  • Poor connector pin contact or corrosion at relay/ECM connector
  • ECM/PCM driver transistor or internal electronics fault

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) or fault lamp illuminated
  • Aftertreatment/DPF warning or regeneration disabled
  • Possible reduced engine performance or limp mode depending on vehicle strategy
  • Aftertreatment heater or related devices not energizing
  • Stored freeze-frame data showing low control circuit voltage

What to check

  • Retrieve freeze frame and readiness status with a scan tool; confirm P05F4 and any related codes
  • Visual inspection of relay, connector, wiring harness for damage, corrosion, melted insulation or rodent chew
  • Check relevant fuses/fusible links for continuity and correct rating
  • Verify correct relay part and seating; inspect relay socket for corrosion or bent pins
  • Backprobe relay control pin and the ECM control pin while re-creating the relay command (with a scan tool or key cycle)
  • Wiggle wiring harness while monitoring to reproduce intermittent faults

Signal parameters

  • Expected control signal when ECM commands ON: typically near battery voltage (about 11–14 V) for a high-side driver or near 0 V if the ECM uses a low-side sink—consult vehicle wiring/repair data
  • When relay not commanded: control circuit should show the opposite state (open/high impedance or battery voltage depending on driver type)
  • Typical automotive small relay coil resistance: roughly 50–200 ohms (varies with relay manufacturer); measure against known-good relay spec
  • Fuse/fusible link continuity: near 0 ohms (closed)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a scanner, record freeze frame and live data, then clear the code to confirm it returns. Note any related codes.
  2. Perform a visual inspection: relay, socket, wiring harness, fuses, and grounds. Repair obvious damage and retest.
  3. Verify fuse/fusible link feeding the relay coil/power; replace if blown and record whether it blows again (indicates short).
  4. Identify relay control pin and backprobe it. Command the relay ON with a scan tool or key cycle while monitoring voltage. Compare to expected signal parameter (see vehicle data).
  5. If control circuit reads low when ECM is commanding ON, disconnect the relay and measure voltage at the relay connector with the connector plugged and unplugged to determine if the fault is in wiring/relay or ECM.
  6. Check continuity/resistance from the relay control pin back to the ECM control pin and to ground to find shorts or opens. Repair wiring faults as found.
  7. Swap in a known-good identical relay or bench-test the suspect relay to confirm coil and contact operation.
  8. If wiring and relay check OK and the control driver output at the ECM remains low/incorrect, suspect ECM/PCM driver fault — consult manufacturer procedures before replacement.
  9. After repairs, clear codes, perform required readiness/learning procedures, and verify system operation on-road or via forced regen test if applicable.

Likely causes

  • Short to ground on relay control wire
  • Failed power relay coil or contacts
  • Intermittent/poor ground at relay or chassis ground point
  • Blown fuse supplying relay coil or related circuit
