Cylinder 2 glow plug open circuit

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Open or broken glow plug element in cylinder 2
  • Damaged or disconnected glow plug harness/connector for cylinder 2
  • Corroded or loose connector or terminal
  • Faulty glow plug relay or driver circuit in the ECM/PCM
  • Blown fuse protecting the glow plug circuit
  • High resistance in harness or poor ground

Symptoms

  • Extended cranking or hard cold start
  • Rough idle or misfire after cold start
  • Increased white/gray smoke on cold start
  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • Possible reduced fuel economy until engine warms

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and freeze data with a diagnostic scan tool; confirm P0672 and check related codes
  • Visually inspect glow plug harness, connectors and wiring for damage, corrosion or disconnection at cylinder 2
  • Check relevant fuses and glow plug relay for continuity and proper operation
  • Measure resistance of the cylinder 2 glow plug (hot and cold if possible) compared to factory spec
  • With connector unplugged, check for supply voltage at the harness when glow system is commanded ON
  • Perform a current draw test when glow plug is commanded (compare to other cylinders)

Signal parameters

  • Glow plug resistance (typical): 0.4–3.0 ohms (refer to Land Rover spec for exact value)
  • Supply voltage at glow plug connector during preheat: ~9–14 V (depends on system state and battery)
  • Expected current draw per glow plug (typical): 5–20 A during preheat (varies by design)
  • Activation duration: preheat time typically a few seconds to 10+ seconds depending on engine temperature and control strategy
  • Open-circuit condition: infinite resistance or no current flow when commanded

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify code with an appropriate scan tool, record freeze frame and related codes. Clear the code and attempt to re-create to confirm persistence.
  2. Visually inspect the glow plug wiring harness, connector at cylinder 2, and nearby harness routing for damage, corrosion, or pin damage.
  3. Check fuses and the glow plug relay/contactor. Replace or bench-test relay if suspect.
  4. With ignition off, disconnect the cylinder 2 glow plug connector and measure glow plug resistance between the plug terminal and plug body/engine ground. Compare to spec. Infinite/open = failed plug.
  5. Reconnect, back-probe the harness side connector. Command glow system ON with scan tool and measure voltage at the connector. No voltage = wiring/relay/ECM driver issue.
  6. While commanding ON, measure current draw for cylinder 2 (clamp meter if possible). Compare to other cylinders. Zero or very low current indicates open/high resistance.
  7. If harness voltage is present but plug shows open, replace the glow plug and re-test. If new plug shows normal resistance and draws current, clear codes and verify proper operation.
  8. If no voltage or current at harness when commanded, trace harness for opens and shorts, test relay output, and test ECM/PCM driver output per factory procedures. Replace harness/relay or repair wiring as required.
  9. After repair or replacement, erase codes, re-run preheat/activation cycles and test drive or cold-start to confirm the fault does not return.

Likely causes

  • Failed glow plug (cylinder 2 open)
  • Damaged/loose connector at cylinder 2 glow plug
  • Broken wire in glow plug harness to cylinder 2
  • Faulty glow plug relay or control module driver output
  • Blown fuse or poor battery/ground connection

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Stored: P0672 — Cylinder 2 Glow Plug Open Circuit. ECM detected no/low current or open circuit when commanding the cylinder 2 glow plug. MIL set. Consult freeze frame for operating conditions.
