Causes

What to check

  • Visually inspect glow plug wiring, connectors and the cylinder 5 area for damage, corrosion or loose pins
  • Check related fuses and glow/auxiliary heater relay operation
  • Measure resistance of glow plug 5 (engine cold) using a multimeter; compare to other cylinders and spec
  • Back-probe the harness at the glow plug connector and command glow ON with scan tool; measure voltage and current

Signal parameters

  • Expected glow plug resistance: typically low ohms (manufacturer-specific). An open circuit is shown as OL/∞ or very high resistance compared with other cylinders
  • Voltage at glow plug terminal when commanded ON: approx. battery voltage (near 11–14 V) if relay/driver is working — consult manual
  • Current draw per glow plug: typically several amps each (varies by design). A zero or very low current indicates open circuit
  • Scan tool status: ECM command to heater ON should be present during preheat; monitor ECM control output and compare to measured harness voltage

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a diagnostic scanner, read all codes and freeze frame. Note related heater/glow system codes.
  2. Visually inspect glow plug 5 connector, wiring harness and nearby grounds for obvious damage, corrosion or a loose terminal.
  3. With ignition OFF and engine cool, disconnect glow plug 5 connector and measure resistance across the glow plug to cylinder head (use service spec when available). An open circuit indicates a failed glow plug.
  4. Reconnect and back-probe the harness. With the scan tool commanding glow ON (preheat), measure voltage at the connector. No voltage suggests an upstream issue (fuse, relay, ECM driver).
  5. Measure current draw of the glow plug circuit when activated (clamp meter on the feed) or compare voltage drop under load. No current while commanded indicates open circuit.
  6. Inspect and test glow relay, associated fuses, and wiring continuity between relay/ECM and the glow plug connector. Repair any broken wiring or poor connections.
  7. If wiring, relay and fuses are good, consider replacing the glow plug. After replacement, clear codes and perform a verification cold start. If the code persists and wiring/relay tested OK, suspect ECM output driver and proceed per manufacturer guidance.
  8. After repair, clear DTCs and confirm system operation over multiple cold starts and verify no reoccurrence of the code.

Likely causes

  • Glow plug element has failed (open circuit)
  • Damaged harness (chafing, broken conductor) between glow plug and relay/ECM
  • Connector pins pushed out, corroded, or contaminated at cylinder 5
  • Glow plug relay or control module fault preventing current flow
  • Fuse located in glow/heater circuit is blown
  • Internal ECM output driver fault (less common)
