Throttle Actuator Control Lamp Control Circuit
Causes
- Blown fuse or failed ignition-switched power to lamp circuit
- Open or shorted wiring between PCM/ECM and instrument cluster/lamp
- Corroded, loose or damaged connector at cluster or ECU
- Failed dashboard indicator lamp or LED assembly
- Water intrusion or pinched harness causing intermittent contact
- PCM/ECM or body control module output driver fault or software error
Symptoms
- MIL / Check Engine Lamp or throttle actuator indicator behavior abnormal (doesn’t illuminate or stays on)
- Possible reduced engine power / limp-home mode depending on vehicle
- Intermittent or permanent TAC lamp operation failure
- Other throttle-related DTCs may be present
- Possible no-crank or starting anomalies on some vehicles (rare)
What to check
- Use a scan tool: read freeze-frame, pending/complementary codes and current status of TAC lamp and throttle-related parameters
- Visual inspection of wiring harness, connectors and fuses for the instrument cluster and PCM/ECM
- Inspect instrument cluster lamp or LED assembly for damage or corrosion
- Check for aftermarket accessories spliced into ignition/power circuits
- Back-probe lamp connector and ECU output to observe voltage with key ON and during lamp command
- Check connector pins for corrosion, bent pins or water intrusion
Signal parameters
- Ignition ON: instrument cluster lamp supply ≈ 12 V (battery voltage) on supply side
- When lamp driver sinks (lamp ON): control/driver node expected ≈ 0–1 V (ground reference) for a low-side driver
- When lamp driver OFF / open: control node expected ≈ battery voltage (~11–14 V)
- If PWM driver is used: duty cycle varies; expected frequency typically low (1–50 Hz) — consult vehicle-specific data
- Lamp current: typically in the low hundreds of mA for incandescent bulbs or lower for LEDs; verify expected current for the vehicle
Diagnostic algorithm
- Connect a scan tool, record all codes and freeze frame data. Note whether the TAC lamp is commanded on/off and whether code is current or intermittent.
- Clear the code and perform an ignition cycle / short drive to see if the code returns.
- Visually inspect fuses and relays related to instrument cluster and ECM. Replace any blown fuses and retest.
- Visually inspect wiring and connectors between the ECM/PCM and instrument cluster for damage, corrosion, or pinched sections.
- With ignition ON (engine off), back-probe the lamp supply and control wires at the cluster. Verify supply voltage (~12 V) and control driver behavior while commanding the lamp using a scan tool.
- Check continuity from the cluster lamp connector to the ECM pin; check for short to power or ground. Repair any open or shorted wiring.
- If the lamp/LED assembly is removable, test or replace the lamp/assembly to confirm it is not shorted or open.
- If wiring and lamp are good, use an oscilloscope to verify the ECM output driver waveform and check for abnormal PWM, stuck high/low, or noise.
- Repair or replace damaged wiring, connectors, fuses, or instrument cluster as found. After repairs, clear codes and verify no recurrence.
- If fault remains after thorough wiring and cluster checks, consider ECM/PCM or BCM driver failure and consult manufacturer service information for reprogramming or module replacement procedures.
