Causes

  • Faulty ignition coil or coil-on-plug module
  • Faulty ignition coil driver or internal control circuitry in the engine control module (ECM/PCM)
  • Intermittent or corroded connector(s) at coil or module
  • Wiring harness damage (short to power/ground or high resistance) between ECM and ignition coil
  • Low battery/poor charging system affecting coil drive voltage
  • Related sensor faults (crank/cam position) causing mis-timed coil commands

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • Intermittent or consistent engine misfire(s) — rough idle, hesitation or stumble
  • Loss of power or poor acceleration
  • Hard starting or extended cranking
  • Reduced fuel economy
  • Multiple misfire-related trouble codes may be present (P0300-series)

What to check

  • Read all stored and pending codes and capture freeze-frame data with a capable scanner
  • Note which cylinder(s) are affected and any associated misfire codes (P0301–P0308)
  • Visual inspection of coil connectors, wiring harness, and ECM connectors for damage, corrosion or water intrusion
  • Check battery voltage and charging system under load
  • With key on/engine off, probe coil connector for battery feed and ground presence
  • Measure coil primary and secondary resistance and compare to typical specification

Signal parameters

  • Typical coil primary resistance (varies by design): ~0.3–2.0 ohm (many COP coils) — refer to OEM spec
  • Typical coil secondary resistance: ~3k–15k ohm (design-dependent)
  • Primary drive: pulsed battery voltage (0–12 V) with dwell time in milliseconds; waveform should show clean switching edges on scope
  • Expected command behavior: coil driver should switch to ground (or to supply depending on architecture) synchronized with crank/cam signals
  • Crankshaft/cam sensor signals: proper amplitude and timing relative to coil command

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify the code and related codes with a scan tool; record freeze-frame and misfire counts.
  2. Inspect wiring, connectors and coil boots for obvious damage, corrosion or moisture. Repair any damaged wiring/connectors.
  3. Check battery and charging system; ensure proper supply voltage (at least 12 V) while cranking and under load.
  4. With ignition off, measure coil primary and secondary resistances and compare to OEM values. Replace coils that are out of spec.
  5. With a DVOM and back-probing (or an oscilloscope for best results), verify coil supply voltage and switching ground signal while cranking/running. Look for voltage drops, intermittent switching, or abnormal duty cycles.
  6. Perform a wiggle test on harness/connectors while monitoring coil command and misfire counts to detect intermittent faults.
  7. If coil and wiring check good, use an oscilloscope to compare primary drive waveforms and secondary spark pattern between a known-good cylinder and the suspect cylinder.
  8. Swap the suspect coil with a known-good coil (if practical) to see if the code/misfire follows the coil. If it follows the coil, replace the coil.
  9. If the problem follows the wiring or remains on the same cylinder after coil swap, suspect ECM driver, wiring repair or connector repair.
  10. Check for ECM software updates/TSBs; if ECM internal driver is confirmed faulty, replacement and reprogramming of the module may be required.
  11. After repairs, clear codes and test drive to confirm the fault does not return.

Likely causes

  • Degraded or failing coil(s)/coil pack
  • Poor ground or power supply to the coil driver circuit
  • Damaged wiring or connector to coil(s) causing high resistance or intermittent contact
  • Internal failure in the ECM ignition driver stage
  • ECM requires software update or reflash

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Control module detected ignition coil driver performance outside expected parameters and stored a performance fault (P06D1). MIL may be illuminated. Fault may be stored as pending before becoming a confirmed/current code depending on conditions.
