Causes

  • Internal fault or corruption in the Glow Plug Control Module memory/firmware
  • Intermittent or low supply voltage to the module (battery, poor charging, loose connection)
  • Damaged, corroded, or loose connector or wiring (power, ground, CAN bus)
  • Water ingress or physical damage to the module
  • Module programming/software mismatch or failed update
  • CAN bus communication errors or ECU communication fault

Symptoms

  • Glow plug warning lamp or diesel preheat lamp illuminated
  • Extended cranking or difficulty cold starting
  • Reduced / incorrect glow plug preheat timing
  • Related engine management limp behavior or reduced performance
  • Multiple related codes stored (glow plug circuit / communication)

What to check

  • Read and record all stored DTCs and freeze frame data with a capable scan tool
  • Check battery voltage and charging system (battery fully charged, >12.4 V at rest; >13.5 V running)
  • Visually inspect glow plug control module connector, pins, and wiring for corrosion, damage or water ingress
  • Check module power and ground circuits for proper voltage and low resistance
  • Verify CAN bus communication with a scan tool (module present on network) and check for other U-codes
  • Check for blown fuses or relays supplying the module

Signal parameters

  • Battery voltage (key ON and engine running)
  • Supply voltage to glow plug control module pin(s)
  • Module ground continuity/resistance
  • CAN High / CAN Low voltage idle levels and activity
  • Glow plug control module status/heartbeat seen on scan tool
  • Glow plug current draw (if applicable) and individual glow plug resistance

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Use a compatible diagnostic tool to read all codes and freeze frame. Note related communication or glow plug circuit codes.
  2. Verify battery state-of-charge and charging system. Recharge or support battery if low and re-check code presence.
  3. Visually inspect the glow plug control module and connector for corrosion, bent pins, water damage or overheating. Repair any obvious wiring damage.
  4. Check power and ground at the module with a DVOM. With ignition ON measure supply voltage at the module power pin(s) and check ground continuity to chassis/negative battery terminal.
  5. Check the CAN bus signals (voltage levels and data) with a scope or scan tool. Look for missing module responses or bus errors.
  6. If wiring and power/ground are good, attempt to clear the code and perform a key cycle. If the code returns immediately, suspect internal module memory fault.
  7. Check for manufacturer service bulletins or required software/firmware updates. Reflash or update software using dealer-level tool if applicable.
  8. If reflash not available or unsuccessful and all wiring/power/communications are confirmed good, consider replacing the glow plug control module and program/configure per manufacturer instructions.
  9. After repair, clear codes and perform function tests and verify no reoccurrence across multiple key cycles and cold starts.

Likely causes

  • Failed glow plug control module (most likely when no other faults present)
  • Poor battery condition or weak charging system causing memory corruption
  • Corroded/loose module connector or damaged harness at module
  • ECU software incompatibility or incomplete software update
  • CAN bus wiring fault or another module interfering with communication

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Glow Plug Control Module 1 memory checksum/sum error — the module detected corrupted or inconsistent stored data during its internal memory check. May indicate internal module failure, power interruption, or communication/software issue.
