Fluid Temperature Sensor Circuit Low Input

Causes

  • Short to ground in TFT sensor signal circuit
  • Damaged or corroded connector/pins at sensor or TCM
  • Open or high-resistance wiring in sensor circuit
  • Faulty transmission fluid temperature sensor
  • Low transmission fluid level or extremely cold fluid (rarely) affecting readings
  • Faulty transmission control module (TCM) or PCM input circuitry

Symptoms

  • Transmission enters limp/limited shift mode or stores additional codes
  • Harsh or incorrect shift behavior based on temperature compensation
  • Transmission temperature gauge/scan tool shows unusually low or implausible temperature
  • Check Engine or transmission warning lamp illuminated
  • Reduced fuel/shift performance due to wrong temperature-based control

What to check

  • Scan vehicle for P0713 and any related codes; record freeze frame and live TFT value
  • Visually inspect sensor connector and harness for damage, corrosion, chafing, or pin push-out
  • Backprobe sensor connector and check for reference voltage and ground presence with ignition on using a DVOM
  • Measure sensor signal voltage or resistance at connector while cold and warming; compare to spec if available
  • Wiggle wiring while monitoring signal to reproduce fault (check for intermittent shorts/opens)
  • Inspect transmission fluid level and condition—correct level can affect sensor immersion

Signal parameters

  • Typical TFT sensor output: approximately 0.1–4.9 V (varies with temp and design) — low input often
  • Some sensors are NTC thermistors; resistance decreases as temperature rises (specific ohm values depend on sensor and temperature)
  • Reference/ignition voltage and ground should be present at sensor connector when key ON (voltage typically 5 V or a switched reference from TCM — consult factory spec)
  • Scan tool live data should show fluid temp and fault status; P0713 will often coincide with a stable low temperature reading

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve freeze-frame and live data (TFT) with a capable scan tool; confirm low reading and any related codes.
  2. Visually inspect harness and connectors from sensor to TCM for damage, corrosion, or water ingress; repair as needed.
  3. With ignition ON (engine off), backprobe connector: verify reference voltage and ground are present; record voltage. If reference missing, trace to TCM.
  4. Measure sensor signal voltage or resistance at connector. If values are out of expected range (very low voltage or short to ground), disconnect sensor and measure wiring resistance to ground to identify short.
  5. If wiring is intact, install a known-good replacement sensor or bench-test sensor per factory procedure; recheck circuit values.
  6. If sensor and wiring check good, consult wiring diagram and test TCM input pin; consider TCM fault or internal short and follow manufacturer guidance for module testing/replacement.
  7. Clear codes and road test; monitor TFT live data to confirm repair and that P0713 does not return.

Likely causes

  • Shorted sensor signal wire to ground at harness or connector
  • Corroded or pushed-out terminal at sensor or TCM connector
  • Failed TFT sensor element giving near-zero output
  • Connector contamination or water intrusion causing low-voltage reading

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor Circuit Low Input — signal to TCM is below expected range (possible short to ground, damaged sensor, wiring/connectors, or module fault).
