Causes

  • Low or contaminated transmission fluid
  • Faulty shift solenoid(s) controlling 5th gear
  • Internal hydraulic leak (worn clutch pack or piston seals)
  • Damaged 5th gear, planetary set, or synchromesh (manual-indexed designs)
  • Valve body sticking or internal valve bore wear
  • Wiring or connector faults to shift solenoids / TCM

Symptoms

  • Check Engine/Transmission warning lamp illuminated
  • Transmission will not shift into 5th (sticks in lower gear)
  • Vehicle drops out of gear or shifts into limp/reduced gear mode
  • Reduced top speed and poor highway fuel economy
  • Harsh, late, or delayed shift into 5th; possible transmission noise or slippage

What to check

  • Retrieve all stored codes and freeze frame data; note related transmission or CAN codes
  • Check transmission fluid level, color and smell (burnt odor)
  • Perform a road test while monitoring live data (commanded gear vs actual gear, output speed vs engine speed)
  • Monitor shift solenoid status and duty cycle with a scan tool during attempt to engage 5th
  • Inspect wiring and connectors to solenoids and TCM for damage/corrosion
  • Check for pending or manufacturer-specific transmission codes and calibration updates

Signal parameters

  • Commanded gear: 5 (TCM requests 5th)
  • Actual gear/gear ratio: should match expected 5th ratio (output speed / input speed)
  • Transmission output shaft speed: consistent with 5th gear at given engine RPM
  • Shift solenoid(s) duty cycle or on/off state: changes when 5th is commanded (0–100% or ON/OFF)
  • Line/apply pressure: within manufacturer spec when 5th is commanded (measure with gauge)
  • Torque converter lockup status: unlocked/locked as expected for gear and load

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record all codes and freeze frame data with a full-capability scan tool; clear codes and attempt to re‑create fault.
  2. Check transmission fluid: level with engine running and at operating temperature, and inspect for contamination or burnt smell; correct level and replace fluid/filter if suspect.
  3. Perform a monitored road test: command 5th gear (if supported) and observe commanded vs actual gear, solenoid status and function, and output shaft speed to confirm failure to achieve correct ratio.
  4. Inspect wiring and connectors for the 5th gear shift solenoid(s) and related circuits; wiggle-test while monitoring for intermittent changes.
  5. Measure shift solenoid resistance and bench-test (apply voltage) where service manual allows; compare to spec.
  6. If solenoids and wiring are OK, connect a pressure gauge to the recommended test port(s) and check line and apply pressures while requesting 5th gear; evaluate for insufficient pressure or slow rise.
  7. If hydraulic pressures are low, inspect valve body (sticking valves, worn bores) and check for internal leaks (clutch pack wear, piston seal failure).
  8. If pressures and solenoids are within spec, verify TCM software level and perform relearn/adaptive procedures per service manual; if failed, consider TCM replacement after confirming wiring and sensors.
  9. If internal mechanical damage is suspected (damaged gearset, clutch, planetary), remove transmission for disassembly and inspect components; replace damaged parts and reassemble with correct fluids and updates.
  10. After repairs, clear codes and perform full road test and TCM adaptation/learn procedures to confirm 5th gear engagement and proper function.

Likely causes

  • Low/contaminated fluid or incorrect fluid level
  • Faulty shift solenoid or solenoid circuit related to 5th gear
  • Internal hydraulic leakage (worn clutch pack or seals)
  • Sticking valve body or clogged filter

Fault status
