Causes

What to check

  • Read all stored and pending codes and freeze frame data with a capable scan tool
  • Check transmission fluid level, color and smell (burnt odor, heavy contamination)
  • Inspect transmission fluid for metal debris after pan removal (if safe/appropriate)
  • Verify TCM has correct software and known technical service bulletins (TSBs)
  • Visually inspect wiring, connectors and grounds to transmission and solenoids
  • Perform actuator/solenoid on/off tests with bidirectional scan tool

Signal parameters

  • Commanded gear (TCM request) vs Actual gear/gear ratio
  • Transmission line pressure (kPa or psi) under load and during shifts
  • Shift solenoid duty cycle (%) or ON/OFF status
  • Shift solenoid resistance (ohms) and supply voltage (12 V when commanded)
  • TCM fault codes and communication status (CAN bus)
  • Clutch apply pressure for 5th gear (if available from vehicle sensors)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a full-function scan tool, read and record all codes and freeze frame data. Note any associated transmission or electrical codes.
  2. Clear codes and attempt to reproduce. If P074D returns, proceed with systematic checks.
  3. Check transmission fluid level and condition. Top or change fluid if low/contaminated and retest.
  4. Inspect external wiring and connectors to the transmission and TCM. Repair any corrosion, damaged pins or poor grounds.
  5. Use the scan tool to command shift solenoids for 5th gear (bi-directional control). Observe solenoid response, resistance, and current draw.
  6. Monitor live data while attempting a shift: commanded gear vs actual ratio, line pressure changes, solenoid duty. Note abnormalities.
  7. If solenoids do not operate or values are out of range, bench-test or replace suspect solenoid(s) or repair harness. Re-test.
  8. If solenoids and wiring test good but gear still won’t engage, perform a hydraulic pressure test with a transmission pressure gauge to verify line/apply pressures during shift.
  9. If hydraulic pressures are low or unstable, remove pan/filter and inspect for debris or clutch material. Consider valve body inspection or overhaul.
  10. If internal mechanical failure is suspected (clutch pack, sun gear, drum damage), a transmission removal and internal inspection/repair is likely required.
  11. Check for TCM software updates or calibrations and reflash if required. Replace TCM only after isolating electrical/hydraulic/mechanical causes.
  12. After repairs, clear codes and perform a thorough road test to verify proper engagement of 5th gear and that no related codes return.

Likely causes

  • Faulty shift solenoid or valve body channel affecting 5th gear
  • Low fluid level or badly degraded fluid causing insufficient hydraulic pressure
  • Internal clutch pack failure for gear 5 (worn plates, broken band)
  • Electrical issue: open/short in solenoid power, ground, or communication lines
  • TCM software fault or calibration mismatch
