Causes

  • Shorted wiring in the shift solenoid C circuit (short to ground)

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and live data with a factory-level or bi-directional scan tool
  • Check transmission fluid level and condition (color, odor, metal particles)
  • Visually inspect wiring and connector for solenoid C for damage, corrosion, or pin push-out
  • Backprobe connector and measure voltage and ground when commanding solenoid ON/OFF
  • Measure solenoid coil resistance with an ohmmeter at the connector
  • Check for shorts to ground or short to battery on the solenoid control circuit

Signal parameters

  • Typical solenoid coil resistance: commonly ~5–60 ohms (varies by vehicle; consult service manual)
  • Typical coil current when energized: roughly 0.2–1.5 A (varies by design)
  • Supply voltage: nominal battery/ignition 12 V available to the solenoid supply circuit
  • Control method: many systems use PCM/TCM as a low-side driver (grounds the coil) often using PWM
  • PWM frequency (if used): often in the range 50–300 Hz (vehicle-dependent)
  • Expected behavior: when commanded ON, control driver will pull the control wire toward ground or produce a PWM waveform; when OFF the driver releases the circuit

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all transmission-related codes and freeze-frame data. Note whether other solenoid codes or P0700 are present.
  2. Inspect transmission fluid for level and contamination. Replace fluid/filter if badly contaminated before further testing.
  3. Visually inspect the solenoid connector and harness for damage, corrosion, chafing, or pin issues. Repair any obvious harness/connectivity problems.
  4. With ignition ON (engine off), backprobe the solenoid C connector. Measure coil resistance across the solenoid terminals and compare to specification. A very low resistance indicates internal short; infinite/very high indicates open.
  5. Using a scan tool with bi-directional control, command solenoid C ON and OFF while observing the control wire voltage and assessing if the PCM/TCM is commanding correctly. Monitor live data for commanded vs actual solenoid status.
  6. Check for a short to ground on the control wire: disconnect the solenoid connector and measure resistance from the control pin to chassis ground. Low resistance suggests short to ground in harness or driver stuck ON.
  7. Check for short to battery: measure voltage on control wire with connector disconnected and ignition ON; presence of battery voltage when off may indicate wiring short to B+.
  8. Wiggle test the harness while monitoring the circuit to reproduce intermittent faults.
  9. If wiring and connector are good, bench-test the solenoid by applying the correct voltage (follow vehicle-specific safe procedure) to confirm mechanical operation. Do not apply voltage without following safety procedures.
  10. If solenoid tests OK and wiring is good, suspect TCM/PCM driver fault—verify by substituting a known-good module or using manufacturer diagnostics before replacing control module.
  11. If contamination or mechanical sticking suspected, remove valve body/solenoid assembly for inspection, cleaning, or replacement as required.
  12. After repairs, clear codes and perform a road test and scanner verification to confirm the fault does not return.

  • Circuit short to ground on the solenoid control wire
  • Corroded/loose connector at the solenoid harness
  • Valve body contamination causing the valve to remain open
  • Failed output driver inside the TCM/PCM
