Causes

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and all stored transmission codes with a capable scan tool
  • Visual inspection of transmission connectors, pins and wiring harness for damage or corrosion
  • Wiggle test harness while monitoring live data / DTC status
  • Measure battery voltage at fuse/solenoid power feed with key ON
  • Backprobe solenoid connector to check control signal and ground
  • Measure solenoid coil resistance and compare to spec

Signal parameters

  • Solenoid coil resistance: typically in the low single digits to a few tens of ohms (common range ~6–30 Ω) — consult OEM spec
  • Supply voltage to solenoid power pin: near battery voltage with key ON/engine OFF (~11–14 V)
  • Control signal: PWM from TCM; frequency commonly 20–150 Hz and variable duty cycle depending on commanded pressure
  • Current draw when activated: typically several hundred mA to ~1–2 A depending on solenoid — compare to spec
  • Open circuit: very high or infinite resistance; short to ground: near 0 Ω

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify code P0763 and capture freeze-frame/live data. Note any additional transmission codes.
  2. Perform a thorough visual inspection of wiring, connectors and pin condition at the solenoid and TCM. Repair any obvious damage.
  3. With key OFF, disconnect the solenoid connector and measure coil resistance across the solenoid terminals. Compare to OEM specification.
  4. Check for continuity between the solenoid connector and the TCM control pin; check for shorts to ground or battery.
  5. With key ON (engine OFF), backprobe the connector: verify constant supply voltage on the power feed and a good ground. If power/ground missing, trace upstream (fuse, relay, ground point).
  6. With engine running or during a commanded shift (use scan tool to actuate solenoid), monitor the control wire for PWM signal and appropriate voltage swings. Look for intermittent signals while wiggling harness.
  7. If coil resistance and wiring are good but signal/power absent or erratic, swap solenoid C with another identical solenoid (if accessible) to see if the code follows the solenoid or remains on the circuit/TCM side.
  8. Replace solenoid if it fails resistance/current tests or behaves inconsistently. Repair wiring/connectors as required.
  9. If wiring and solenoid check OK and problem persists, inspect/replace TCM or perform TCM software update per manufacturer guidance.
  10. Clear codes and road test to confirm repair. Re-scan to ensure no return of P0763 or related codes.
