Causes

  • Faulty shift solenoid (2-3 solenoid or related solenoid pack)
  • Open, shorted or intermittent wiring/poor connector to shift solenoid
  • Low transmission fluid level or incorrect/contaminated fluid
  • Clogged transmission filter or valve body passages
  • Sticking valves or mechanical wear in the valve body or clutch packs
  • Faulty TCM/PCM or incorrect software

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light / transmission fault lamp illuminated
  • Harsh, delayed, or missed 2→3 upshift
  • Transmission may stay in lower gear or go into limp/reduced-gear mode
  • Surging or slipping around the 2-3 shift point
  • Unusual transmission noise during shift events

What to check

  • Read and record all transmission/engine codes and freeze-frame data
  • Scan live data: monitored gear, shift solenoid status/duty, TCM commanded gear and actual gear
  • Check transmission fluid level, color and smell (burnt/metallic)
  • Inspect wiring harness and connectors for damage, corrosion or looseness at the solenoid and TCM/PCM
  • Measure shift solenoid resistance and compare to the vehicle specification
  • Backprobe solenoid connector while commanding shift to confirm voltage/pulse/duty

Signal parameters

  • Solenoid resistance: vehicle-dependent; typical range ~5–40 ohms (consult OEM spec before replacing)
  • Command voltage: near battery voltage (11–14 V) or switched ground depending on design when solenoid is energized
  • Control: PWM duty cycle 0–100% when modulated; frequency commonly tens to a few hundred Hz (vehicle-dependent)
  • No-load solenoid activation should produce measurable current and valve actuation (bench or in-vehicle test)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify P0782 is current or stored; record freeze-frame and all related codes. Clear codes and attempt to reproduce.
  2. Check transmission fluid level and condition; correct level and replace if contaminated or burnt.
  3. Visually inspect wiring and connectors at the shift solenoid(s) and TCM; repair any damaged wiring or corroded connectors.
  4. Measure resistance of the 2-3 shift solenoid with the connector disconnected; compare to OEM spec. Replace solenoid if out of range.
  5. With a scan tool, command the 2-3 shift solenoid and backprobe the connector to confirm proper voltage/pulse/duty and good ground. Wiggle harness to detect intermittent faults.
  6. If electrical tests are good but shift still not occurring, inspect valve body: remove pan, check filter and valve-body passages for debris. Replace filter; clean if necessary.
  7. If valve body and solenoids are serviceable and electrical system is OK, consider valve-body service or transmission repair (clutch pack/servo) and check TCM software/flash as final steps.
  8. If intermittent or ambiguous results, perform bench test of solenoid (apply proper voltage) or consult factory service procedures. Do not perform wiring repairs without isolating power and following safe practices.

  • Low or contaminated transmission fluid
  • Clogged valve-body passage or sticking valve
