Causes

  • Open or high-resistance wiring or connector to the solenoid
  • Faulty shift solenoid or solenoid pack
  • Poor ground at TCM or transmission harness
  • Corroded or damaged transmission connector pins
  • TCM internal fault or incorrect software/calibration
  • Hydraulic or mechanical transmission problem affecting sensor feedback (less common)

Symptoms

  • Erratic, delayed or harsh gear changes
  • Transmission stuck in one gear or limited (limp) mode
  • Illuminated Check Engine or Transmission warning light
  • Reduced drivability / reduced engine power in some vehicles
  • Possible transmission noise or slippage

What to check

  • Read freeze-frame and confirmed data with a capable scan tool (live solenoid PIDs, battery voltage)
  • Inspect transmission harness and connector for damage, corrosion, debris or fluid intrusion
  • Check battery/charging system voltage under load
  • Backprobe solenoid circuit at TCM and at solenoid connector while exercising solenoid with scan tool
  • Measure solenoid coil resistance and compare to OEM spec
  • Check continuity and resistance of wiring to TCM and to chassis ground

Signal parameters

  • Nominal solenoid coil resistance: typically a few ohms to a few tens of ohms (consult OEM spec for exact value)
  • Operating voltage: near battery voltage (~11–14.5 V) when commanded ON (or switched ground designs); 0 V when OFF — varies by design
  • Duty cycle/pulse-width: 0–100% depending on commanded control (TCM will modulate for pressure control)
  • Expected current draw: depends on coil resistance (I = V/R) — abnormal low or high current indicates short or open
  • Response time: solenoid should respond within tens of milliseconds when commanded; sluggish response indicates fault

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record all transmission and powertrain codes and freeze-frame data. Note battery voltage and vehicle operating conditions when code set.
  2. Reproduce symptom if possible. Clear codes and attempt to re-run drive cycle while monitoring live data (solenoid status, commanded duty, transmission pressures if available).
  3. Visually inspect transmission connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, or fluid contamination. Repair any visible damage.
  4. With ignition ON (engine off) or per OEM procedure, backprobe the solenoid circuit at the TCM and at the solenoid connector. Verify presence of reference voltage and proper switching signal when commanded by the scan tool.
  5. Measure coil resistance at the solenoid connector with connector unplugged. Compare to OEM specification. Replace solenoid if out of range.
  6. Check continuity and resistance of wiring between TCM and solenoid. Wiggle harness to check for intermittent faults. Repair/replace wiring as needed.
  7. Verify good grounds for transmission and TCM. Clean and tighten ground connections.
  8. If wiring, connector and solenoid check good, consider TCM driver fault. Verify TCM power and communications; consult wiring diagrams and consider TCM bench test or replacement following OEM guidance.
  9. After repair, clear codes and perform a full drive cycle to confirm fault does not return. Recheck for related codes and perform transmission adaptation/learn procedures if required by manufacturer.
  10. Safety note: follow vehicle manufacturer procedures for disabling the battery and relieving pressure where required. Avoid shorting circuits and take care around moving/transmission components.

Likely causes

  • Damaged/unplugged transmission harness connector (water/corrosion)
  • Failing shift solenoid with high coil resistance
  • Poor/loose ground or power supply to solenoid circuit
  • Intermittent wiring short to voltage or open circuit
  • TCM output driver fault

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Transmission DTC P0788 stored — High solenoid sensor/feedback value. TCM detected a higher-than-expected voltage/resistance or implausible signal from a transmission solenoid circuit. Transmission may operate in limp mode until fault corrected.
