Causes

  • Open circuit in solenoid C wiring (broken wire, connector pin pushed out)
  • Short to ground or battery in solenoid C circuit
  • Corroded or loose connector or terminals at solenoid or module
  • Failed pressure control solenoid C (internal short/open)
  • Faulty transmission control module (TCM/PCM) or damaged driver output
  • Blown fuse or poor ground related to transmission control circuitry

Symptoms

What to check

  • Retrieve freeze-frame and all related transmission codes with a scan tool
  • Inspect transmission fluid level and condition; note contamination or metal debris
  • Visually inspect connector at solenoid C and wiring harness for damage, corrosion, and secure terminals
  • Check related fuses and grounds for the transmission control circuit
  • Backprobe solenoid C connector and observe voltage while key on and while commanded by the scanner
  • Perform wiggle test on harness while monitoring voltage/waveform and codes

Signal parameters

  • Static coil resistance typically in ~10–50 ohms (varies by vehicle); compare to manufacturer spec
  • Control signal: PWM/duty cycle command from TCM – 0–12 V switching (OFF ≈ 0 V, ON ≈ battery voltage)
  • Typical PWM frequency range often 20–200 Hz (varies by design)
  • Expected behavior: commanded changes in duty cycle or voltage when performing shift/pressure tests; no intermittent drops to 0 V unless commanded

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a professional scan tool, record codes and freeze-frame data; check for related DTCs.
  2. Visually inspect fluid level/condition; address fluid issues before electrical replacement.
  3. Inspect solenoid C connector and harness for corrosion, damaged insulation, pin damage, or water intrusion. Repair as needed.
  4. Check transmission-related fuses and engine/transmission grounds; repair any issues.
  5. With ignition on, measure pin voltages at the solenoid connector: verify battery supply and ground reference.
  6. Measure coil resistance at the solenoid (disconnect connector). If out of spec, replace solenoid.
  7. Backprobe connector and command solenoid with scan tool while observing waveform with a lab scope or voltmeter to confirm PWM/duty changes and look for intermittent drops or shorts.
  8. Perform continuity test from solenoid connector to TCM/PCM connector; check for short to ground or battery and for high resistance/opens.
  9. If wiring, connector, or solenoid are confirmed good and controlled signals are incorrect, suspect TCM/PCM driver fault; consult manufacturer procedures and consider module testing/replacement.
  10. After repairs, clear codes, road-test the vehicle through shift ranges, and re-scan to confirm the code does not return.

  • Wire chafing shorting to chassis or battery
  • Failed solenoid coil
  • Corroded pins or water intrusion in connector
  • Faulty TCM driver (less common)
