Causes

What to check

  • Retrieve freeze-frame data and all transmission codes with a capable scan tool
  • Compare commanded solenoid state versus actual feedback (if available) in live data
  • Visual inspection of transmission fluid level and condition (burnt smell, dark color, debris)
  • Inspect solenoid connector and wiring for corrosion, damage, or poor pins/grounds
  • Measure solenoid resistance (cool, at rest) and compare to manufacturer spec
  • Backprobe solenoid connector while commanding ON/OFF; check for correct voltage/duty and ground

Signal parameters

  • Solenoid resistance: typically in the single- to low-double-digit ohms (varies by manufacturer) — consult service spec
  • Command signal: battery voltage (0–12 V) or PWM duty cycle depending on solenoid type
  • Expected apply pressure when commanded: higher than released pressure and within manufacturer spec (varies by design)
  • No significant voltage drop between TCM and solenoid during command; ground continuity present
  • No erratic or intermittent duty signals when commanded

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record all stored transmission and engine codes and freeze-frame data. Clear codes and attempt to reproduce.
  2. Check transmission fluid level and condition. If fluid is low or heavily contaminated, correct and retest. Replace fluid/filter if necessary.
  3. Visually inspect wiring and connectors to the Friction Element H solenoid and TCM. Repair any damage or corrosion; ensure good grounds.
  4. With ignition on (engine off), measure solenoid coil resistance. If out of spec, replace solenoid.
  5. Using a scan tool, command the solenoid ON/OFF and observe commanded duty/voltage. Backprobe connector to confirm voltage and ground while commanding.
  6. While commanding the solenoid, measure apply pressure at the appropriate transmission pressure port (service manual). If pressure does not rise when commanded, suspect hydraulic blockage, valve body fault, failed solenoid, or internal clutch/piston failure.
  7. If electrical tests pass but no apply pressure, remove valve body/solenoid assembly and inspect for stuck valve, debris, or worn bores. Clean or replace components as required.
  8. If valve body and solenoid bench tests OK, inspect clutch pack and apply piston for wear or damage — this may require transmission partial or full disassembly.
  9. If internal TCM driver fault is suspected after verifying harness and solenoid, consult manufacturer guidance for TCM tests, reflash, or replacement.
  10. After repairs, clear codes and perform road test and re-check for code reappearance and correct shift feel.
