Stuck in Drive

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Faulty shift solenoid(s) (stuck open/closed or shorted)
  • Valve body internal blockage or stuck valve
  • Low, contaminated, or incorrect transmission fluid
  • Faulty Transmission Control Module (TCM) or software/firmware issue
  • Shift cable or selector linkage binding or misadjusted
  • Park/Neutral position (range) sensor or selector switch fault

Symptoms

  • Transmission will only operate in Drive and will not shift to other gears or into Park/Reverse
  • Vehicle may rev without proper gear changes or may stay at a single gear ratio
  • Transmission/Check Engine warning lamp or transmission warning lamp illuminated
  • One or more related DTCs stored (shift solenoid, range sensor, TCM)
  • Harsh or delayed engagement, slipping, or unusual transmission noises
  • Reduced performance or limp-home mode

What to check

  • Connect a scan tool and read all transmission and engine codes; save freeze-frame data
  • Compare requested (commanded) gear vs actual (reported) gear on the scan tool during key-on and while driving
  • Check transmission fluid level, color and smell (burnt smell, dark color, debris) with correct procedure and temperature
  • Visually inspect shifter lever, shift cable/linkage and selector assembly for binding, broken components or misadjustment
  • Inspect wiring and connectors to TCM and transmission (corrosion, loose pins, damaged insulation)
  • Check park/neutral position (range) sensor inputs and continuity

Signal parameters

  • TCM commanded gear (Requested gear) vs transmission reported gear (Actual gear)
  • Shift solenoid status (On/Off) and duty cycle (%) from scan tool
  • Transmission fluid temperature (ºC or ºF)
  • Line pressure (psi or kPa) during shifts and at idle
  • Engine RPM vs vehicle speed during attempted shifts
  • Park/Neutral position (range) switch status

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify symptom and conditions: record when it happens (cold/hot, idle/drive), read and record all codes and freeze-frame data
  2. Clear codes and attempt to reproduce; note which codes return and under what conditions
  3. Check fluid level and condition; if fluid is very low, refill to spec and retest (do not drive extensively if level is severely low)
  4. Visually inspect shifter assembly, selector cable and linkage for binding, broken parts or improper adjustment; correct if found and retest
  5. Inspect electrical connectors and wiring to transmission and TCM; repair any damaged wires or corroded connectors
  6. Check park/neutral position (range) sensor operation and alignment; replace or adjust if out of spec
  7. Measure shift solenoid resistances and compare to factory specification; replace any solenoids that are out of range
  8. Use a scan tool to command individual shift solenoids and observe valve/gear response and line pressure; if solenoids do not actuate electrically but have correct resistance, suspect TCM or wiring
  9. If solenoids actuate electrically but transmission does not shift, perform hydraulic pressure tests and inspect valve body for contamination or stuck valves; repair or replace as required
  10. If electrical and hydraulic systems test good, consider TCM failure or software calibration — check for TCM updates and perform replacement only after other causes are ruled out
  11. After repairs, clear codes, perform re-learn/adaptive procedures required by the manufacturer, and perform a road test to verify proper shifting

Likely causes

  • Shift solenoid mechanical/electrical failure
  • Contaminated ATF/valve body debris causing valves to stick
  • Failed or misadjusted shift cable/selector linkage
  • Park/Neutral position sensor fault or incorrect input to TCM
  • Wiring/connector issue to TCM or solenoids

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Code P07E7 indicates the transmission remains in Drive and does not shift as commanded. Causes can be electrical (solenoids, wiring, TCM), hydraulic (fluid level/pressure, valve body), or mechanical (linkage, selector). Further testing is required to isolate the root cause.
