Causes

  • Open or short in range/multi-function switch wiring
  • Corroded, loose or damaged connector at the switch or PCM
  • Failed transmission range / multi-function switch (PRNDL sensor)
  • Intermittent contact or contamination in the gear selector assembly
  • PCM input circuit fault or software anomaly
  • Water ingress or physical damage to harness in transmission/console area

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • Incorrect or no gear indicated on dash (PRNDL mismatch)
  • Vehicle may go into limp/limitation mode or default gear
  • No engine crank or start in some gear selector designs (safety interlock)
  • Transmission may not shift properly or may be stuck in a gear
  • Intermittent or erratic gear position readings on scan tool

What to check

  • Read and record freeze frame and live data for gear position / range PID with a scan tool
  • Verify actual shift lever position matches PID and dash PRNDL display
  • Visual inspection of harness, connectors and selector assembly for damage, corrosion, or water
  • Backprobe connector at the multi-function switch and PCM to check voltages and signal changes while moving lever
  • Check reference voltage (typically ~5 V) and ground at the sensor connector
  • Perform continuity and resistance checks between switch and PCM harness pins with ignition off

Signal parameters

  • Reference voltage: approx. 5.0 V (varies by vehicle)
  • Signal voltage: changes between defined voltages or return paths for each gear position (0–5 V or switched circuits)
  • Ground: low resistance to chassis ground (
  • Resistance across specific switch terminals may change by gear position — consult vehicle-specific values
  • Gear position PID should change immediately and predictably when moving selector
  • Possible related CAN/BUS messages showing gear position if select-by-wire systems are used

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve stored codes and freeze-frame data with a scan tool. Note any other transmission or PCM codes.
  2. Verify symptom: confirm actual lever position vs. gear position reported by scanner and dash display.
  3. Clear code and attempt to re-create condition. If code returns, proceed to electrical checks.
  4. Visually inspect connectors and harness for damage, corrosion, pin push-out, or water intrusion. Repair any damage.
  5. Backprobe the multi-function select switch connector. With ignition ON, verify reference voltage (≈5 V), signal, and ground. Move selector through all positions and observe signal changes.
  6. If reference voltage or ground missing, trace and repair open/short to power or ground. Check continuity between switch and PCM pins with ignition OFF.
  7. If signals do not change correctly but wiring checks good, remove and bench-test or substitute the range/multi-function switch per service manual procedures.
  8. Inspect and test PCM connector pins and wiring; if intermittent or short evident near PCM, repair harness. Re-test after repairs.
  9. If wiring and switch test good and code persists, consider PCM input circuit failure and follow vehicle manufacturer procedures (reprogram or replace PCM only after verifying external circuits).
  10. After repair, clear codes and perform a test drive and gear-cycle validation to confirm the fault is resolved.

Likely causes

  • Wiring harness damaged where it flexes with the shift mechanism
  • Connector pins pushed out, corroded or bent at the switch or PCM
  • Failed multi-function select sensor inside the selector assembly
  • Poor ground or reference voltage at the sensor circuit
  • Internal transmission harness short to power or ground
