Causes

  • Faulty shift solenoid or actuator
  • Damaged wiring or poor connector at TCM / transmission
  • Faulty or intermittent speed sensor (input/output)
  • Low or contaminated transmission fluid / incorrect fluid level
  • Internal transmission/mechanical failure (synchros, clutches, valve body)
  • TCM software bug, corrupted adaptation values, or calibration issue

Symptoms

  • Check engine/transmission warning lamp illuminated
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing gear changes
  • Transmission stuck in limp/neutral or single gear
  • Unusual transmission noises during gear changes
  • Inconsistent vehicle speed vs engine RPM (slippage)
  • Stored related transmission / speed sensor codes

What to check

  • Read all stored and pending DTCs from powertrain and transmission modules
  • Review freeze frame and live data during a reported event
  • Check transmission fluid level, smell and color (burnt or contaminated)
  • Visually inspect wiring harness and connectors at TCM and transmission for damage, corrosion or poor pins
  • Check for recent software updates or technical service bulletins (TSBs) from Land Rover
  • Confirm CAN bus health and related module communications

Signal parameters

  • Commanded gear / requested shift (TCM output)
  • Actual selected gear or gear ratio feedback
  • Transmission input and output speed sensors (Hz/RPM)
  • Shift solenoid command states and current draw
  • Throttle position and engine RPM during shifts
  • TCM error/status flags and adaptation values

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a capable diagnostic tool that can read Land Rover transmission module data and retrieve full fault history and freeze frame. 2. Attempt to reproduce the symptom while recording live data: commanded gear, actual gear, input/output speeds, solenoid commands, and RPM/speed relationship. 3. Verify transmission fluid level and condition; correct level and replace fluid/filter if contaminated or suspect. 4. Inspect wiring and connectors between TCM and transmission (look for chafing, corrosion, broken wires, water ingress). Wiggle harness while monitoring live data for intermittent faults. 5. Check resistance and operation of individual shift solenoids; compare to manufacturer specification. 6. Test input and output speed sensors for correct waveform and signal under drive. 7. If electrical and sensor checks OK, review valve body and internal hydraulic operation (may require removal) — check for sticking valves or internal wear. 8. Check for TCM software updates and perform adaptation/learning reset or TCM reflash per manufacturer procedure. 9. After repairs, clear codes and road-test to confirm proper gear changes; monitor live data to verify commanded vs actual gear alignment. 10. If internal transmission repairs are required or if fault persists after electrical and TCM checks, refer to specialist transmission workshop or Land Rover dealer for further diagnosis.

Likely causes

  • Failed shift solenoid or actuator for the affected gear
  • Damaged speed sensor or intermittent signal to TCM
  • Poor electrical connection at transmission harness or ground
  • Worn clutch pack or valve body sticking causing failed shift
  • TCM needs software update or adaptive values reset

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Transmission control reports incorrect/failed gear change (gait change 9): commanded gear does not match actual gear selection or shift profile.
