Causes

What to check

  • Visually inspect wiring and connectors for damage, corrosion, pin push-out, or water intrusion at the sensor and TCM connectors
  • Check battery voltage and system grounds; low voltage can cause erroneous signals
  • Check transmission fluid level and condition; very low or contaminated fluid can cause transmission faults
  • If available, confirm if there are any TCM software updates or technical service bulletins (TSBs) from Land Rover

Signal parameters

  • Typical sensor signal: 0–5 V reference (varies with exact sensor design) — signal should change when selecting/engaging 5th or 6th gear

Diagnostic algorithm

  2. Clear codes, then perform a road test while monitoring live data; try to reproduce the symptom and watch the gear-load PID when shifting into 5th and 6th.
  3. Visually inspect connectors and wiring for the 5–6 gear-load sensor/switch and the TCM. Look for corrosion, bent pins, chafing, or water ingress. Repair any obvious damage.
  4. With ignition ON (engine off) and using back-probing where safe, verify reference voltage and signal voltage at the sensor connector. Confirm the signal changes when commanded into 5th/6th (or during a road test).
  5. Check continuity between the sensor connector and the TCM pin to rule out open circuits; check resistance to ground for proper grounding.
  6. If wiring and connector tests pass, compare measured sensor signal to OEM specifications. If out of spec, replace the gear-load sensor/switch.
  7. If sensor and wiring test OK, inspect for internal transmission issues (fluid level/condition) and consider module reprogramming or replacement if TCM is suspected. Check for related codes that indicate internal transmission faults.
  8. After repairs, clear codes and perform final road test to verify P0829 does not return and that 5th/6th gear operation is normal. Document all findings and repairs.
