Causes

  • Open or shorted wiring in the sensor/switch D circuit
  • Corroded, bent or disconnected connector/pins at the sensor or control module
  • Failed transmission fluid pressure sensor or pressure switch D
  • Bad ground or missing reference voltage to the sensor
  • Intermittent harness damage (chafing, pinched, water intrusion)
  • Faulty PCM/TCM (less common)

Symptoms

  • Check Engine / MIL illuminated
  • Transmission may shift harshly, erratically, or stay in limp/limitation mode
  • Delayed or slipping shifts
  • Stored transmission-related trouble codes and possible reduced performance
  • Intermittent transmission behavior if the fault is intermittent

What to check

  • Read stored codes and freeze-frame data with a scan tool; note related transmission codes
  • Check transmission fluid level and condition (contamination, burnt smell)
  • Visually inspect sensor connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, loose pins
  • Backprobe the sensor connector and monitor signal while key ON and engine running
  • Check reference voltage and ground at the sensor connector (usually 5V ref and ground)
  • Measure continuity/resistance between sensor connector and TCM connector for open/shorts

Signal parameters

  • Reference voltage: typically ~5.0 V (check vehicle-specific spec)
  • Signal type: may be a switch (open/closed) or analog pressure sensor (voltage proportional to pressure)
  • Analog sensor typical range: ~0.5 V (low pressure) to ~4.5 V (high pressure) — vehicle-specific
  • Switch-type: expected logic present (near 0 V when active or near reference voltage when inactive) — confirm with OEM wiring diagram
  • Resistance: switch closed ≈ near 0 Ω (or very low); open = infinite/OL (if switch type)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all codes and freeze-frame data. Note if other transmission or powertrain codes are present.
  2. Verify transmission fluid level and condition; correct if low or contaminated before further testing.
  3. Visually inspect the pressure sensor/switch D connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, or loose pins.
  4. With key ON (engine OFF) and then with engine running as required, backprobe the sensor connector and observe: reference voltage, signal voltage, and ground integrity using a digital multimeter or oscilloscope.
  5. If no reference or ground, trace and repair the power/ground circuit between the sensor and PCM/TCM; check fuses and ground points.
  6. If reference and ground are good but signal is out of expected range or intermittent, measure continuity between sensor and module to check for opens/shorts.

  • Damaged connector or corroded terminals at the pressure sensor
  • Broken wire or internal short between sensor and TCM
  • Failed pressure sensor/switch D (internal short or open)
  • Poor ground or missing 5V reference from module
  • Harness rubbed through at frame/body or routed near hot components
