Clutch Position Sensor B Circuit

Causes

  • Faulty clutch position sensor (channel B)
  • Open or shorted wiring in the sensor B circuit
  • Corroded, loose or damaged connector/pins at the sensor or ECU
  • Poor ground or missing reference voltage to the sensor
  • Intermittent mechanical binding of clutch linkage or sensor
  • PCM/TCM input circuit fault or software anomaly

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) or transmission warning lamp ON
  • No-crank or starter inhibited (interlock not seeing clutch engaged)
  • Unusual shift behavior, inability to shift or limp mode
  • Cruise control disabled or erratic
  • Intermittent or inconsistent clutch position readings on a scan tool

What to check

  • Read freeze-frame and live data with a scan tool to confirm sensor B PID behavior
  • Visually inspect sensor, connector and harness for damage, pin corrosion, or water ingress
  • Backprobe sensor connector and verify reference voltage (typically 5 V), signal and ground
  • Check continuity and resistance of wiring between sensor and control module, including at service harness flex points
  • Wiggle harness and operate clutch while watching live data to reproduce intermittent faults
  • Check for related stored codes and recent software updates or technical service bulletins (TSBs)

Signal parameters

  • Sensor type varies by vehicle; typical signal is 0–5 V (analog) or a switched 0/5 V digital output
  • Expected state change when clutch pedal actuated (closed/open) — often 4.0 V the other for digital switches
  • If a potentiometer, smooth variable voltage change across full pedal travel (no jumps or dropouts)
  • Reference supply usually ~5 V ±0.5 V and ground continuity near 0 Ω; signal circuit should show continuity to ECM input
  • No rapid voltage spikes, inversions or missing pulses when using an oscilloscope

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve DTCs and freeze-frame data; note conditions when P087A set (engine off/on, pedal position, temperature).
  2. Inspect sensor and harness for obvious damage, corrosion, chafing where harness flexes at pedal or firewall.
  3. Backprobe the sensor connector with ignition ON and measure reference voltage and ground; compare to signal while operating clutch pedal.
  4. Verify the signal changes smoothly and consistently when actuating the clutch. If digital, confirm expected switch states (open/closed).
  5. Perform continuity/resistance tests from sensor connector to the control module connector; check for short to power or ground.
  6. Wiggle test harness and connector while watching live data to detect intermittent faults; repair any damaged wiring or connectors.
  7. If wiring and connectors check OK, replace the clutch position sensor (B) and re-test. Clear codes and confirm they do not return.
  8. If code remains after sensor replacement, inspect control module power/ground and consider module input circuit fault; consult vehicle-specific service information and TSBs before module replacement.

Likely causes

  • Sensor B internal failure
  • Damaged harness where it flexes near pedal or bellhousing
  • Connector contamination or bent pins at sensor or control module
  • Broken or high-resistance ground/5V reference feed
  • Sensor misalignment or mechanical wear preventing proper travel
