Causes

  • Backprobe solenoid connector and measure control voltage while commanding solenoid on/off from scan tool
  • Measure solenoid coil resistance and compare to factory spec
  • Perform wiggle test of harness while monitoring voltage/continuity for intermittent faults

Signal parameters

  • Control driver output: typically a switched/PWM duty from 0 V (off) to battery voltage (~12 V) when commanded — verify with factory data
  • Expected solenoid coil resistance: commonly ~20–60 Ω (varies by model) — consult Land Rover specification
  • Supply voltage at connector (key ON): battery voltage (~12 V) present on supply pin
  • Ground continuity: near 0 Ω from solenoid ground to chassis/TCM ground when measured with harness disconnected
  • When commanded ON, control line should show a change in voltage or PWM duty cycle as specified by the TCM

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Confirm code and capture freeze frame/live data. Note battery voltage and operating conditions when the code set.
  2. Visual inspection: battery condition, fuses, wiring, and connectors at the transmission solenoid pack for damage or corrosion.
  3. With ignition ON, backprobe the solenoid connector. Verify reference/supply voltage is present and stable (battery voltage).
  4. Command the D solenoid ON/OFF using a scan tool while monitoring control wire voltage and PWM. Document responses.
  5. Measure solenoid coil resistance with connector disconnected. Compare to factory spec; infinite/low resistance indicates open/short.
  6. Check continuity from TCM output pin to solenoid connector pin. Check for short to ground or battery using an ohmmeter/short tester.
  7. Perform wiggle/functional test along harness while monitoring for intermittent changes. Repair damaged wiring or connector terminals.
  8. If wiring and solenoid check good, substitute a known-good solenoid or control module if available and retest.
  9. If fault persists after harness and solenoid replacement, test or replace the TCM/PCM output driver according to Land Rover procedures.
  10. Clear codes and perform a road test under similar conditions to verify repair. Re-scan for related codes.
