Causes

  • Dead or weak 12V battery or poor battery connections
  • Starter motor or starter solenoid failure
  • Blown fuse or faulty starter/ignition relay
  • Crankshaft or camshaft position sensor fault or signal loss
  • Immobiliser or key transponder/security system preventing start
  • No fuel delivery (pump, relay, fuse, fuel pressure)

Symptoms

  • No crank (no starter engagement) or no start after cranking
  • Single or repeated starter clicks
  • Dash lights illuminate but starter does not operate
  • Starter turns slowly or battery voltage collapses during crank
  • MIL or other diagnostic trouble codes present
  • Security/immobiliser warning light or alarm active

What to check

  • Read DTCs and freeze frame data from all modules; note any related codes
  • Verify vehicle is in Park/Neutral and handbrake/shift interlocks are satisfied
  • Measure 12V battery voltage at rest and during attempted start
  • Check battery terminals and chassis/engine earths for corrosion/tightness
  • Check starter relay, starter fuse/fusible link and wiring to starter
  • Load or current draw test on starter to detect internal starter faults

Signal parameters

  • Battery voltage (rest): ~12.6 V; during crank should not drop below ~9.6 V (vehicle specific)
  • Starter motor current draw (A) and voltage during crank
  • Crankshaft position sensor waveform/frequency and crank RPM signal
  • Camshaft position sensor waveform if applicable
  • Engine speed (RPM) while cranking
  • Fuel rail pressure (bar/psi) and fuel pump current/voltage

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record all stored DTCs and freeze frame data; note related codes and sequence of events.
  2. Confirm simple items first: transmission in Park/Neutral, handbrake switch, brake pedal switch (if required), correct gear selector position and any door/hood interlocks.
  3. Check 12V battery open‑circuit voltage and terminal condition. Charge or replace battery if below spec; clean and tighten terminals and earth connections.
  4. Verify fuses and relays for starter, fuel pump and ECM. Swap or bench‑test relays if suspect.
  5. Attempt to crank while observing battery voltage. If voltage collapses, perform starter current draw test. If starter does not engage but battery is good, remove and bench test starter/solenoid.
  6. Confirm crankshaft position sensor signal with a scope or diagnostic tool. If no crank signal, trace wiring/connectors and replace sensor as needed.
  7. Check immobiliser/key recognition using the factory scan tool. Try a known good key or bypass immobiliser procedure per manufacturer guidance.
  8. Verify fuel delivery: listen for pump prime, confirm fuel pump power and fuel pressure at the rail. Repair fuel pump/relay/fuse as required.
  9. Check ignition: confirm coil and spark presence during cranking. Repair or replace ignition components if no spark.
  10. Scan for module communication errors (lost comm with ECM/TCU/BCM). Repair power/ground or CAN wiring issues if found.
  11. For hybrid models, verify high‑voltage battery state and HV interlock; consult hybrid‑system diagnostics if HV system prevents engine start.
  12. If electrical and fuel/ignition systems are present and crank signals exist but engine still won’t run, perform compression/leakdown to rule out mechanical seizure or major engine damage.

Likely causes

  • Low or discharged 12V battery or poor battery terminals/earth
  • Starter motor/solenoid or starter relay/fuse
  • Crankshaft position sensor (no crank signal)
  • Immobiliser/key recognition fault
  • Fuel pump/fuel pressure absent

Fault status
