Causes

  • Open or shorted wiring/connectors in fan #2 power, ground or tach/feedback circuit
  • Faulty cooling fan assembly (motor, internal electronics or tachometer)
  • Mechanical obstruction or seized fan bearings preventing proper rotation
  • Low supply voltage or poor ground to the fan (DC-DC converter or relay issue)
  • Battery pack thermal management control module or fan driver/software fault
  • Intermittent connector corrosion or water ingress

Symptoms

  • Battery thermal management warning or MIL illuminated
  • Reduced battery charge/discharge rates or reduced vehicle performance (thermal protection)
  • Unusual fan noise or no audible fan operation from fan location
  • Battery temperature higher than expected under load or during charging
  • Possible limp-home mode or charging disabled until fault is cleared

What to check

  • Read and record freeze-frame and all stored codes with a scan tool (include related battery/thermal codes)
  • Inspect fan #2 connector and wiring for corrosion, damage, pin push-out, or water intrusion
  • Observe fan operation with vehicle conditions that command cooling (use scan tool to view commanded duty and actual fan speed/RPM)
  • Check supply voltage and ground at the fan connector when fan is commanded on (do not open high-voltage components unless qualified)
  • Visually inspect fan for mechanical blockage, debris, and free rotation
  • Measure fan current draw if safe/possible and compare to specification

Signal parameters

  • Commanded fan duty cycle or % output (0–100%)
  • Fan feedback/tachometer signal (pulses per second or RPM)
  • Supply voltage to fan (typically low-voltage supply from DC-DC, e.g., ~12 V nominal) or control-module driver voltage
  • Ground continuity and resistance to chassis
  • Fan current draw (amps) under load
  • Battery pack temperature and thermal-management state while testing

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve DTC, freeze-frame data and related codes. Note conditions when code set (vehicle speed, battery temp, command state).
  2. Without touching high-voltage components, visually inspect fan #2, connectors and wiring for damage, corrosion or foreign objects. Ensure fan can spin freely.
  3. Use a scan tool to command fan #2 ON and monitor commanded output versus feedback RPM/tach. Record values.
  4. With fan commanded ON, backprobe the fan connector at the low-voltage side to verify supply voltage and ground. Compare to expected values. If no supply, trace back to relay/fuse/DC-DC or fan driver.
  5. If supply and ground are present but no tach signal or incorrect RPM, disconnect and inspect fan assembly. If safe and allowed by manufacturer procedures, apply appropriate bench power to fan assembly to confirm operation (observe safety protocols for HV systems).
  6. Check wiring continuity and resistance between ECU/module and fan connector. Repair any damaged wiring or connectors found.
  7. If wiring and power are good but fan fails or feedback is incorrect, replace fan assembly. After replacement, clear codes and perform functional test under normal operating conditions.
  8. If replacement fan does not resolve issue, test/replace the battery thermal management module or fan driver per manufacturer diagnostics. Check for software updates or calibration issues.
  9. After repair, clear codes and test drive/charge to confirm fan operates across required conditions and no reoccurrence of the code.

Likely causes

  • Damaged or corroded connector at the fan
  • Failed fan motor or internal speed sensor
  • Broken or rubbed-through wiring harness between battery pack and fan
  • Stuck debris or worn bearings preventing the fan from reaching expected RPM
  • Faulty fan driver circuitry in the battery thermal management module
