External influence on quantity control

Causes

  • Damaged or corroded wiring or connector in fuel control/injector circuits
  • Faulty injector(s) or injector driver (actuator) malfunction
  • Incorrect fuel rail pressure or fuel supply restriction
  • Faulty fuel pressure regulator or low fuel pressure
  • Sensor faults that affect quantity calculation (MAP, MAF, fuel pressure sensor)
  • Boost/vacuum leaks or EGR issues changing measured conditions

Symptoms

  • MIL (check engine light) illuminated
  • Reduced engine power or limp-home mode
  • Rough idle, misfire or hesitation under load
  • Poor fuel economy and/or increased smoke from exhaust
  • Hard starting or extended crank time
  • Intermittent faults that may come and go with temperature or vibration

What to check

  • Read all DTCs and freeze-frame data; note related codes and operating conditions
  • Inspect wiring harnesses and connectors for corrosion, damage or poor pin fit at injectors, rail pressure sensor and ECM
  • Perform visual inspection for aftermarket fuel/air modifications (tuning boxes, piggybacks)
  • Check battery voltage and charging system for proper supply and low-noise grounds
  • Measure static and dynamic fuel rail pressure against manufacturer specs
  • Scan live data: commanded fuel quantity vs actual indicators (injector pulse width, rail pressure)

Signal parameters

  • Fuel rail pressure (bar or kPa) — static and under load
  • Commanded fuel quantity / injector pulse width (mg/stroke or ms)
  • Measured injector feedback (where applicable) or injector duty cycle
  • MAP (kPa) or MAF (g/s) readings and intake air temperature
  • Boost pressure / turbocharger control actuator position
  • EGR position / flow where fitted

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all codes, freeze frame and live data. Note engine conditions when code set (rpm, load, temp).
  2. Visually inspect wiring/connectors at injectors, rail pressure sensor and ECM; repair any damaged wiring or poor connections.
  3. Verify battery/charging system and grounds. Correct poor battery/ground connections before further testing.
  4. Check fuel rail pressure at idle and under load; compare to manufacturer values. Inspect fuel filter, pump and regulator.
  5. Monitor commanded fuel quantity and actual indicators (injector pulse widths, rail pressure). Look for discrepancies or intermittent drops.
  6. Test injectors electrically (resistance) and, when safe, dynamically (scope) to confirm proper drive and response. Swap or bench-test suspect injectors if necessary.
  7. Verify MAP/MAF and related sensor signals for plausibility. Replace or clean sensors if they give implausible values.
  8. Inspect for boost/vacuum leaks and EGR faults that can alter air mass and upset quantity control.
  9. Check for aftermarket tuning or modules; revert to stock calibration if present and re-evaluate.
  10. If wiring, sensors and actuators check good, consider ECM reflash or replacement per manufacturer guidance.
  11. After repairs, clear codes and perform a road test under the conditions that originally set the code; re-scan to confirm the issue is resolved.

Likely causes

  • Wiring/connectors to injectors or rail pressure sensor (most common)
  • Faulty injector or injector driver circuit
  • Low or inconsistent fuel rail pressure due to pump or regulator
  • MAP/MAF sensor giving incorrect input used to calculate quantity
  • Boost leak or EGR causing unexpected air mass and quantity mismatch
  • Intermittent electrical supply or poor ground to ECM/injector drivers
