Causes

  • Back-probe the switch connector with a multimeter to confirm voltage and continuity when pedal is pressed/released
  • Inspect wiring harness for chafing or recent repairs; wiggle test while monitoring signal for intermittent faults

Signal parameters

  • Typical expected behavior: brake switch changes state when pedal is pressed (open → closed or closed → open depending on design)
  • Voltage when active: commonly near battery voltage (~12V) or switched to ground (0V) depending on circuit design
  • Resistance: near 0 Ω when closed, open/infinite when open (for simple mechanical switches)
  • Current draw is very low (milliamps); the circuit is a logic/switch input, not a high-current load
  • Response should be immediate and repeatable with each pedal application (no delay or intermittent toggling)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a scan tool and confirm P1051 and monitor the brake switch input PID while pressing the brake pedal. Note behavior (no change, stuck high/low, intermittent).
  2. Verify brake lights function. If brake lights do not operate, check fuse and perform a bulb/connector check — if bulbs don’t light the switch may not be providing power.
  3. Visually inspect the brake switch and harness at the pedal for damage, corrosion, broken pins or misalignment. Adjust pedal switch if it appears out of position per service manual.
  4. Back-probe the brake switch connector with a voltmeter. With ignition ON, check for reference voltage on the supply terminal and verify the switch output changes state when the pedal is pressed.
  5. If supply/reference voltage is missing, trace back to fuse, ignition feed, or BCM/relay; repair the power feed as needed.
  6. If switch output does not change but supply is present, test switch for continuity (bench test or in-circuit). Replace switch if faulty.
  7. If the switch tests OK, back-probe the signal wire at the receiving module pin to confirm the signal arrives at the module. If the signal is lost in between, repair wiring/connectors.
  8. Perform a wiggle/strain test on harness while monitoring live data to identify intermittent shorts or opens.
  9. If wiring and switch are good but module never sees signal, consult OEM wiring diagrams and consider module input circuit testing or module reprogram/replace per manufacturer guidance.
  10. After repairs, clear codes, re-test operation and verify the code does not return and that related systems (cruise, shift interlock, brake lights) function correctly.
