Causes

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and pending/continuous status with a scan tool; note conditions when fault set
  • Monitor live ECT PID while cold start, warm-up and under drive conditions — check for smooth, plausible temperature rise
  • Compare scanner temperature reading to actual engine temperature (infrared thermometer or thermometer at thermostat housing)
  • Visually inspect ECT connector for corrosion, bent pins, water, or damaged latch
  • Wiggle test harness and connector while monitoring live PID and watch for intermittent changes or flicker
  • Backprobe sensor connector: verify reference voltage (if applicable), ground continuity, and signal voltage behavior during warm-up

Signal parameters

  • ECT signal is a thermistor-based temperature value — resistance decreases as temperature rises (NTC behavior)
  • Signal voltage will vary with design; expect a smooth, continuous change as engine warms (typical on most systems: signal within ~0.1–4.9 V range depending on temperature and circuit design)
  • During cold start the PCM should read a low-temperature value and slowly increase to operating temperature; abrupt jumps, dropouts or frozen values indicate fault
  • Resistance should change steadily with temperature (no open circuit or infinite resistance at normal temps)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve codes and freeze-frame data; note when P1117 set (cold, hot, vibration).
  2. Monitor live ECT PID while performing key-on, cranking, cold start and warm-up. Look for smooth progression; reproduce intermittent condition by wiggling harness.
  3. Visually inspect sensor and connector for corrosion, contamination, bent pins or water. Securely reseat connector. Replace if damaged.
  4. Backprobe connector: verify reference voltage (if applicable), signal voltage behavior and ground. Check for intermittent voltage loss while moving harness.
  5. With engine cool and then hot, measure sensor resistance and confirm it changes with temperature (resistance should decrease as temperature rises). If resistance is erratic or open at any temp, replace sensor.
  6. Check continuity and insulation of harness between sensor and PCM; repair any chafing, broken conductors or shorts to battery/ground. Use shorting/ohm tests and insulation inspection.
  7. Repair or replace connector/pins as needed (clean, solder or use new terminal as required). Protect with dielectric grease if allowed.
  8. If wiring and sensor check good but problem persists, inspect PCM input circuit and grounds; consider PCM testing or replacement as last resort.
  9. Clear codes, perform road/drive cycle and re-scan to confirm the intermittent fault is resolved.
