Causes

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve P1183 and any related codes; note freeze-frame data and occurrence conditions.
  2. Using a scan tool, monitor oil temperature sensor reading at key conditions (cold start, warm idle). Compare to coolant temperature and expected behavior.
  3. Perform a visual inspection of the sensor connector and harness near the sensor for oil contamination, corrosion, crushed wires or pin damage.
  4. With ignition ON (engine off) backprobe sensor connector and check for reference voltage and signal with a multimeter. Record voltages.
  5. Measure sensor resistance (engine cold) at the sensor terminals and compare to manufacturer specification; then warm sensor slowly (if safe) to confirm resistance changes with temperature.
  6. Check continuity of the wiring from the sensor connector to the ECM, and verify no short to battery/ground using an ohmmeter.
  7. If reference voltage or ground is missing or abnormal at the connector, trace wiring back to ECM and inspect grounds and fuses/relays supplying sensor circuits.
  8. If wiring and connector check OK and sensor resistance is out of spec or does not change with temperature, replace the oil temperature sensor.
  9. After repair, clear codes and road-test to confirm proper operation and that P1183 does not return. If fault persists and wiring checks are good, consider ECM input fault and consult manufacturer guidance.
