Causes

  • Short to battery or low-resistance short in EGR drive wiring

What to check

  • Scan for P1193 and any related EGR or electrical codes (P0400–P0409 family)
  • Visual inspection of EGR valve, actuator, wiring harness and connectors for damage, chafing or corrosion
  • Measure continuity and resistance of EGR actuator coil with connector disconnected
  • Perform voltage check at EGR connector while commanding EGR on/off with scanner
  • Measure current draw with a clamp ammeter or inline current meter when EGR is commanded
  • Wiggle testing harness while observing current or scan data to locate intermittent shorts

Signal parameters

  • When commanded, EGR actuator should see proper control voltage/pulse (per manufacturer) and return to baseline when off
  • Typical EGR solenoid/actuator current is limited and should not exceed manufacturer spec — commonly under a few amps for solenoids; an overcurrent condition is higher than normal operating current
  • Coil/actuator resistance is usually low (single- to low-double-digit ohms for motors/solenoids). Open or near-zero resistance (short to battery/ground) is abnormal
  • ECM may use PWM/duty-cycle control — expect changing duty when commanding different EGR positions

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve freeze frame and live data. Note when the code set and any related codes present.
  2. Visual inspection: check EGR valve/actuator, wiring harness, connector seals and engine harness routing for damage, heat spots or corrosion.
  3. With ignition off, disconnect EGR connector. Measure coil resistance across the actuator terminals and compare to spec (or note if open/near short).
  4. Check for short to chassis or battery: measure resistance from the EGR power pin to battery positive and to ground to find unintended connection.
  5. Reconnect and backprobe the connector. With scanner command, observe voltage/pulse and use a clamp meter or inline ammeter to measure current draw while commanding EGR. Do not exceed safe measurement practices.
  6. If high current only when commanded, isolate whether current flows through wiring or actuator by disconnecting actuator and checking if current draw disappears. If current persists with actuator disconnected, suspect wiring/ECM driver.
  7. Wiggle test harness while monitoring current and DTC status to find intermittent shorts or pin contact issues.
  8. If actuator shows excessive current or mechanical binding, remove and bench-test or replace EGR actuator/solenoid. If wiring or connector fault found, repair or replace damaged wiring and connectors.
  9. If wiring and actuator check good, consider ECM driver fault. Confirm with manufacturer diagnostics before replacing ECM.
  10. After repairs, clear codes and perform road/functional test to verify the EGR operates properly and P1193 does not return.

  • Internal short or reduced resistance in EGR actuator/solenoid
  • Wiring harness damage at flex points or near engine where heat/abrasion occur
  • Connector corrosion or water ingress at the EGR connector
  • Faulty driver inside ECM (less common)
