What to check

Diagnostic algorithm
- Retrieve freeze frame and live data. Note when the code set and any related codes present.
- Visual inspection: check EGR valve/actuator, wiring harness, connector seals and engine harness routing for damage, heat spots or corrosion.
- With ignition off, disconnect EGR connector. Measure coil resistance across the actuator terminals and compare to spec (or note if open/near short).
- Check for short to chassis or battery: measure resistance from the EGR power pin to battery positive and to ground to find unintended connection.
- Reconnect and backprobe the connector. With scanner command, observe voltage/pulse and use a clamp meter or inline ammeter to measure current draw while commanding EGR. Do not exceed safe measurement practices.
- If high current only when commanded, isolate whether current flows through wiring or actuator by disconnecting actuator and checking if current draw disappears. If current persists with actuator disconnected, suspect wiring/ECM driver.
- Wiggle test harness while monitoring current and DTC status to find intermittent shorts or pin contact issues.
- If actuator shows excessive current or mechanical binding, remove and bench-test or replace EGR actuator/solenoid. If wiring or connector fault found, repair or replace damaged wiring and connectors.
- If wiring and actuator check good, consider ECM driver fault. Confirm with manufacturer diagnostics before replacing ECM.
- After repairs, clear codes and perform road/functional test to verify the EGR operates properly and P1193 does not return.
