Causes

  • Short or low-resistance condition in solenoid feed or control circuit (partial short to battery/ground).
  • Damaged or chafed wiring causing intermittent or direct short.
  • Corroded or loose connector pins at the solenoid or PCM.
  • Faulty fuel solenoid (internal shorted coil, wrong replacement part).
  • PCM (ECM) output stage fault or incorrect PCM programming.
  • Incorrect or modified aftermarket wiring or components affecting circuit impedance.

Symptoms

  • MIL (check engine light) illuminated with stored P1216.
  • Hard starting, no start, or stall depending on solenoid function (fuel shutoff/prime).
  • Intermittent engine shutdown or erratic starting behavior.
  • No obvious mechanical fuel leak — problem is electrical in nature.

What to check

  • Scan vehicle and record freeze-frame and live data related to solenoid/fuel control.
  • Visual inspection of solenoid connector, wiring harness, and PCM connector for damage or corrosion.
  • Back-probe solenoid connector to check voltage and signal when commanded by the scan tool.
  • Measure solenoid coil resistance with a multimeter and compare to factory specification.
  • Check for continuity to battery and for shorts to ground using an ohmmeter.
  • Perform wiggle test on harness while observing signal to reproduce fault.

Signal parameters

  • Solenoid coil resistance: typically low (single to low tens of ohms) — check factory spec for exact value.
  • Command voltage: near battery voltage when solenoid is powered (or switched to ground depending on circuit design).
  • No-load response: solenoid should actuate within the time range listed in service data; measured response shorter than the lower threshold triggers P1216.
  • PCM driver output: observe switching behavior; should not be permanently shorted to battery or ground.

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve codes and freeze-frame data with a scan tool. Note operating conditions when code set.
  2. Perform a careful visual inspection of wiring, connectors, and harness routing for damage, pin corrosion, or aftermarket splices.
  3. Clear the code and attempt to reproduce while monitoring the solenoid command and any related parameters in real time.
  4. With ignition OFF, disconnect the solenoid connector and measure coil resistance to ground and across the coil; compare to spec. Look for very low resistance indicating a short.
  5. Back-probe the solenoid connector with a multimeter/oscilloscope while commanding the solenoid ON and OFF to verify voltage waveform, switching, and response time.
  6. If resistance and bench test show the solenoid is within spec, inspect PCM output. With proper safety and manufacturer procedures, check PCM driver for shorts or abnormal voltage when commanded. Consider substituting a known-good PCM only after all wiring and solenoid checks.
  7. If wiring or connector damage is found, repair or replace the affected wiring/connector and retest.
  8. If solenoid is out of specification or behaves abnormally on bench test, replace the solenoid and verify the repair by clearing codes and retesting.
  9. After repair, clear codes and perform a drive or functional cycle to confirm the fault does not return.

Likely causes

  • Low resistance/short in solenoid coil or harness.
  • Damaged connector or poor contact causing altered electrical characteristics.
  • Aftermarket replacement solenoid with different coil characteristics.
  • PCM driver shorted (less common).

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Fuel Solenoid Response Time Too Short — PCM detected solenoid activation time shorter than calibrated threshold; electrical problem in solenoid circuit is likely.
