Causes

  • Faulty fuel injector (internal coil intermittent)
  • Broken, chafed or damaged wiring/harness to injector #7
  • Poor connector contact or corrosion at the injector or wiring plug
  • Intermittent short to battery or ground in the injector circuit
  • Poor engine/PCM ground or battery voltage issues
  • Faulty PCM/ECM driver (less common)

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated or flashing intermittently
  • Misfire on cylinder 7, rough idle or rough running
  • Reduced power or hesitation under load
  • Decreased fuel economy
  • Occasional stumble that clears (intermittent)

What to check

  • Scan tool: read freeze frame data, monitor live injector status and pending/confirmed DTCs
  • Perform a visual inspection of the injector harness, connector and fuel rail area for damage, oil contamination or corrosion
  • Wiggle test the wiring/connector while monitoring scanner for code set or misfire changes
  • Backprobe the injector connector to measure voltage/pulse while cranking/idle with a known-good noid light or oscilloscope
  • Measure injector coil resistance with the harness disconnected and compare to spec
  • Inspect and test battery voltage and engine/PCM grounds

Signal parameters

  • Injector coil resistance: consult Chrysler factory spec; typical ranges: low-impedance injectors ~2–5 Ω, high-impedance injectors ~12–16 Ω (verify exact value for vehicle)
  • Connector idle voltage: ~battery voltage (11–14 V) on the feed side
  • Injector drive: pulsed by PCM to ground; pulse width varies with load — commonly 1–10 ms typical at idle/cruise; frequency increases with RPM
  • Noid light should flash in sync with injection events when injector is being driven

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify DTC details: record freeze-frame data and other active/pending codes. Clear codes and attempt to re-create.
  2. Visual inspection: check harness routing, connector condition, signs of heat/chafing, oil intrusion or corrosion at injector #7 and nearby harness.
  3. Wiggle test: with a scan tool monitoring cylinder contribution and the injector circuit, wiggle the connector/wiring while cranking and driving to try to reproduce the code.
  4. Resistance test: disconnect connector and measure injector coil resistance; compare to factory spec. Replace injector if resistance is out of spec or intermittent when gently flexed.
  5. Power/ground check: backprobe the connector. Verify battery voltage at the feed circuit and that the PCM provides a pulsed ground signal when cranking/running (use noid light or oscilloscope).
  6. Continuity and shorts: check continuity from injector pin to PCM pin; check for short to battery or ground and for high resistance/opens.
  7. Injector substitution: swap injector #7 with a known-good injector from another cylinder and see if the code/misfire follows the injector (confirms injector) or stays with the cylinder (indicates wiring/PCM).
  8. Scope the circuit: if intermittent and not obvious, use an oscilloscope to capture injector drive waveform for dropouts, noise or incorrect drive levels.
  9. Repair wiring/connectors: repair damaged wiring, clean/replace connector pins or replace injector as indicated. Re-test and clear codes.
  10. If wiring and injector check good and intermittent driver signals persist, consider PCM diagnostics or replacement after verifying all wiring and grounds.

Likely causes

  • Connector corrosion or bent terminal at injector #7
  • Wire break or intermittent short in harness near the valve cover or rail
  • Injector coil beginning to fail and showing intermittent resistance or intermittent open
  • Loose or corroded ground or power feed affecting injector operation
