Electronic Ignition System Fault Line

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Defective ignition coil or coil pack
  • Faulty ignition control module or ignition driver in the PCM
  • Damaged or corroded wiring/connectors in ignition circuit
  • Open or shorted reference or ground circuit
  • Faulty crankshaft or camshaft position sensor (timing/sync issue)
  • Low battery voltage or poor battery/charging system condition

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • Engine misfire or rough idle
  • Hard starting or no-start condition
  • Reduced engine power or hesitation under load
  • Intermittent stalling or poor drivability

What to check

  • Read and record freeze-frame data and stored misfire/related codes
  • Visually inspect ignition coils, module, spark plugs and wiring for damage or corrosion
  • Check battery voltage and charging system; ensure stable supply during cranking
  • Verify power and ground at coils and ignition module connectors
  • Inspect harness for chafing, melted insulation, or rodent damage near engine and firewall
  • Check connectors for corrosion, bent pins, or poor contact

Signal parameters

  • Crank/Cam sensor: digital trigger pulses synchronized to engine speed (expected coherent pulse train with engine cranking/running)
  • Ignition coil primary: switched supply ~battery voltage (0–12V) with pulsed ground control when firing
  • Ignition driver/control: PWM or pulsed trigger from PCM; pulses should align with cam/crank signals and RPM
  • Reference circuits: typical sensor reference ~5V (verify stable reference with key on)
  • No-load coil secondary: high-voltage pulse delivered to spark plug when commanded (verify with scope or appropriate HV probe)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve freeze frame and all stored DTCs. Note operating conditions when fault set (RPM, temp, load).
  2. Clear codes and attempt to reproduce fault to confirm current status and gather live data.
  3. Perform a visual inspection of ignition coils, spark plugs, ignition module, wiring harness and connectors for damage or corrosion.
  4. Verify battery voltage (should be ~12.4–12.8 V at rest, >13.5 V with engine running). Repeat test under cranking conditions.
  5. With ignition on, check for proper 5V reference (if applicable) to position sensors and stable ground at components.
  6. Using a multimeter or oscilloscope, monitor crank and cam sensor signals for proper pulse pattern and timing integrity while cranking/running.
  7. Probe coil primary circuit: verify supply voltage and that PCM/ignition driver is commanding ground/pulse when engine tries to fire.
  8. If a single coil is suspect, swap with another cylinder coil (if serviceable) and see if any codes or misfires follow the coil.
  9. Repair any damaged wiring/connectors, clean/replace corroded terminals, and secure grounds. Re-test after repairs.
  10. If wiring and external components test good and fault persists, consult manufacturer service manual for PCM ignition driver tests. Replace PCM or ignition module only after verifying all upstream circuits.

Likely causes

  • Corroded/loose connector at ignition coil or module
  • Short/open in coil primary or trigger wiring
  • Failure of an ignition coil or coil pack
  • Bad PCM ignition driver or internal fault
  • Intermittent crank/cam position sensor signal causing ignition timing faults

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Ignition system fault detected on electronic ignition control line. MIL set. Possible intermittent or permanent failure in ignition coil, wiring, sensor, or ignition driver.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.5-3 hours
