Causes

  • Faulty or intermittent knock sensor (cylinder 4)
  • Damaged wiring or poor connector for knock sensor 4
  • Open/short to ground or supply in knock sensor circuit
  • Loose or missing knock sensor bolt or mechanical poor sensor coupling to engine block
  • Excessive engine noise or mechanical damage (piston, bearing) creating abnormal knock
  • ECU software bug or internal fault

Symptoms

  • MIL/Check Engine lamp illuminated
  • Reduced engine power or limp mode when knock adjust limiter is active
  • Persistent ignition timing retard on affected cylinder(s)
  • Unusual engine noise or pinging under load
  • Poor fuel economy or roughness under acceleration
  • Stored freeze frame and knock-count data in ECU

What to check

  • Read stored freeze frame and freeze data, note RPM/load when code set
  • Scan for additional codes (ignition, fuel trim, other knock sensors, ECM faults)
  • Visual inspection of knock sensor 4, its bolt, connector and wiring harness
  • Check battery voltage and engine ground integrity
  • Backprobe knock sensor connector to confirm signal, supply and ground
  • Measure sensor resistance (if service manual value available) and compare

Signal parameters

  • Knock sensor 4 voltage waveform (use oscilloscope) — look for transient pulses during knock
  • ECU knock counts per cylinder (counts/min or per time window)
  • Knock retard/adjustment degrees for cylinder 4 (live data)
  • Engine RPM, load, and throttle position at code event
  • Ignition timing advance/retard values and relative contribution from knock control
  • Battery voltage and ECU supply/ground voltages

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a capable scan tool and confirm P1332 is current. Record freeze frame, knock counts and knock-adjust values for cylinder 4.
  2. Check for related codes (ignition coils, spark plugs, other knock sensor faults, low voltage, ECM faults) and address any concurrent issues first.
  3. Visually inspect the cylinder 4 knock sensor, mounting bolt, and connector for corrosion, damage or loose mounting. Tighten sensor to spec if loose.
  4. With key on engine off, probe the sensor connector to verify reference voltage/supply and ground continuity. Compare to known-good values in service data.
  5. Start engine and monitor knock sensor 4 signal with an oscilloscope while inducing light load (or road test if safe). Look for valid transient waveform when engine is lightly revved or under controlled load. If no signal or noisy/flat signal, suspect sensor/wiring.
  6. Perform resistance check of the sensor if service data available. If uncertain, swap the knock sensor with another cylinder (if identical and accessible) and see if the code follows the sensor.
  7. If swap follows sensor, replace the faulty sensor. If fault remains on cylinder 4, trace and repair wiring harness (repair connector, repair open/short to ground), or repair engine block grounding.
  8. If wiring and sensor check good, examine ignition components (coil, plug) and mechanical causes: compression test, oil analysis, inspect for piston/rod damage that could cause real knock.
  9. If hardware and wiring are good, check ECU grounds and power. Consider ECU reflash or replacement only after all wiring and sensor checks are completed and manufacturer guidance followed.
  10. After repairs, clear codes and perform road test while monitoring knock counts and knock-adjust limiter status to confirm the issue is resolved.

Likely causes

  • Damaged wiring or connector to cylinder 4 knock sensor (most common)
  • Failed knock sensor on cylinder 4
  • Loose sensor mounting or poor mechanical contact to block
  • Faulty ECU or corrupted software (less common)
  • True engine mechanical detonation on cylinder 4 (requires inspection)
