Causes

What to check

  • Read and record freeze frame/related codes and monitor fuel level sensor B live data with a diagnostic scanner
  • Visually inspect fuel tank area, connectors and wiring for damage, corrosion or chafing
  • Check connector pins for corrosion, bent pins or poor contact at the sender and at the harness/ECM
  • Measure reference voltage and ground at the sender connector with key ON (reference typically provided by BCM/ECM)
  • Measure signal voltage/resistance of the sender while moving float (or by hand if accessible) to observe change
  • Wiggle test wiring while observing live data for intermittent faults

Signal parameters

  • Typical variable signal: approximately 0.5–4.5 V across sender range (vehicle-specific — consult factory data)
  • Low-circuit indication: signal voltage near 0 V or below manufacturer threshold
  • Resistance-type senders: expect variable resistance across float travel (often tens to hundreds of ohms; consult factory spec)
  • Open-circuit: infinite resistance or no signal change when moving float
  • Short to ground: continuity between signal wire and chassis ground

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all stored codes and note freeze frame data. Confirm code P1348 is present and whether it is current or history.
  2. With key ON (engine off), monitor live fuel level sensor B data using a Land Rover–capable scan tool. Note voltage/reading and whether it changes when fuel level changes (if safe to do).
  3. Visually inspect and repair any damaged wiring or connectors at the fuel module, harness routing, and body control module/ECM connector. Unplug connectors and inspect pins for corrosion or damage.
  4. Check for proper reference voltage and ground at the sender connector. If reference voltage missing, trace back to BCM/ECM and check related fuses/relays.
  5. Measure signal wire for continuity to the module; check for short to ground or battery. Backprobe the connector and compare to expected voltage/resistance values.
  6. If wiring and power/ground are good but signal is incorrect or does not change with float movement, remove/inspect the fuel module/sender assembly per OEM procedure and bench-test the sender. Replace sender/module if faulty.
  7. If sender tests good, test the module input at the BCM/ECM for proper operation. Repair or replace BCM/ECM only after eliminating wiring and sender faults.
  8. After any repair, clear codes, perform relearn/initialization if required by manufacturer, and verify operation by rechecking live data and road/test conditions.

Likely causes

  • Corroded/loose connector at the fuel tank module or wiring chafe
  • Internal failure of the sender potentiometer (stuck at low output)
  • Short to ground on the sensor signal wire
  • Failed module input (rare compared with wiring/sender failure)
